Name: Devil Ray
Card: MI #007 (Rare)
Points: 10
Faction: Mercenaries
Masts: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Cargo: 3 (rating: 2.5 / 5)
Moves: S (rating: 1 / 5)
Guns : 4L,4L (rating: 2 / 5)
Hit %: 67 (S), 67 (L)
Link : Yeshaji Angria
Keyword: Mercenary, Submarine
Ability: When submerged , this ship gets +L to her
base move.
This is a small sub, with poor cannons and worse
speed (on the surface).
She's no gunship, and two masts don't give the best
odds for ramming and boarding. Her cargo is a little
small for gold running. What can you do with her?
She can approach a wild island submerged, pop up
when it's safe, grab the gold, and run home
submerged. You'd use her like a ghost ship in this
mode, a stealth gold ship that makes up for
below-average capacity with better odds of getting
home. As a gold ship with this kind of
invulnerability, 10 points is a good price.
Also, this ship has a link to Yeshaji Angria, who
combines the treasure-swap ability with the
rob-home-island ability for 8 points. He isn't
cheap, but he's handy for a fast treasure ship, and
the Devil Ray qualifies while she's under water.
This sub with Yeshaji could rob someone's home
island, pick up two more treasures on the way home,
transfer them to another ship (since Mercenaries
can't dock), and do it again. Or, if you're feeling
nasty, put some other crew on board face-down and
cruise off someone's home port. He'll think you have
Yeshaji and keep a fighter near his home to guard
against you. That's one fighter your other ships
won't have to worry about, and you can still ram his
treasure ships as they come home.
This ship isn't a fighter, like most subs. But she
has her uses. Keep those uses in mind, and don't
risk her in a battle she can't win. I'll give her
slightly above-average marks.

Devil Ray
On her own, I am not sure what the role is for the
Devil Ray. Considering and her special ability she
should be a gold runner. She can be fast if
submerged and has a decent three spaces hold. The
problem is she can’t dock at one’s home island to
drop off coins and she has two below average cannons
for fighting. However, considering her link to
Yeshaji Angria one gets a better idea for the role
of this ship. It is to go as fast as possible to
your opponent’s home island and steal the biggest
juciest treasure that Yeshaji can find. In this way
you not only deny your opponent some good gold, you
force him or her to keep a ship back for guarding
and threaten his or her trade route (4L cannons
aren’t good but most gold runners have only a couple
of masts). When your opponent is reacting to your
moves you will always have the upper hand. By
herself the Devil Ray gets a 2/5.
