Ability: If submerged, this ship can ram another
ship (then move away) and then initiate a boarding
party against that ship.
This is the USA's only submarine (aside from the
limited-edition USS Mercury), and she's not too bad.
Speed and guns are fair, and her ability is good if
you like boarding parties. But her cargo is
wretchedly low, and this limits both her treasure
capacity and the number of crew she can carry.
This makes it even more important to use her linked
crew, Captain Montana Mays. Better yet, Mays gives a
+1 on boarding rolls, as well as a second action.
This ship's role is to use Mays to ram and board a
couple of times, fill her tiny holds with gold, hand
off the treasures to another USA ship, and go out
for more ramming and boarding. Her limited speed
means you don't want to go all the way home and back
once you've found some action. Stay submerged, and
use your cannons only to finish off a rich gold ship
that your rams have damaged, so you get half her
goodies.
Used wisely, this ship can be a good thing. But she
has a limited role that keeps me from giving her
anything more than average marks.

USS Lamon
The United States did have an operational attack
submarine in the days of the iron-clads (Do some
google work to find out, it is quite interesting),
so it is great to see that the Americans have the
USS Lamon in this set. This ship is not a
particularly interesting. It may have its uses as a
difficult to hit gold runner since it can submerge
and travel at S + S speed, but it does have a poor
cargo hold. The link to Captain Mays is nice but not
a great feature. USS Lamon could also be used to
harass the enemy’s shipping lanes. Its two cannons
are both 3S and may cause an opponent to move a ship
back to defend. The only reason a two master like
the USS Lamon can be used is because (most of the
time) she cannot be hit when submerged. USS Lamon
gets a 2/5, for 12 points I’d rather field the
Coleoptera.
