Ability: If this ship isn’t assigned a Helmsman
crew, roll a d6 after she resolves a move action. On
a result of 4–6, this ship can move L
The original Neptune's Hoard (from the Revolution
series) was a fast, medium-priced ship with decent
cannons, deep cargo holds, and a good ability. She
was a superb value; Pirate players loved her and
used her a lot. Boy, has she gone downhill.
The very idea of a rakish-looking four-masted
schooner with a move of S is just plain wrong, not
to mention making her useless as a gold ship.
Her ability is new to Ocean's Edge, and compensates
for her pitiful speed somewhat. But do the math: if
you use her ability, you get an extra L move roughly
every other turn. If you use a Helmsman, you get an
extra S move every turn. And since S is more than
half of L, you'll go faster with the Helmsman,
unless you also pay for a reroll crew (like
Griffin) for a second chance at the L-move roll.
Two of her cannons have gained L range, and her
cargo is still 5. She'll make a decent (but slow)
fighter that can load gold in calm moments, or a
decent (but slow) gold ship that can fight her way
out of a jam. If she still cost 12 points like the
original Hoard, I might give her close to average
marks. But her inflated price, combined with her
awful speed, push her almost to the bottom of the
barrel.

Neptune's Hoard
There must be a reason Calico Cat let the Neptune's
Hoard go free... The model itself is rather drab, a
standard four masted schooner done in a drab blue
grey colour. Her stats are just as listless. Four
cannons all 4+ to hit, two of which are "L" range.
The Neptune's Hoard only moves "S" but her ability
gives her an extra "L" movement each move action.
This means half the time her helmsman and crew
actually wakes up and guide the ship. If you pay the
points for a real helmsman he pitches the old one
over board and you lose the extra bit of movement. A
questionable ability though the wording means that
if the ship can move when derilict it can still use
the ability. The one good thing about this ship
(which still does not justify its point cost) is the
cargo hold which is nice and roomy at 5 spaces.
While the Neptune's Hoard is a big ship I would not
suggest using her at all. She can't stand toe-to-toe
with a real fighter unless the right crew is placed
on her, but if you do this an equally kitted
gunfighter will easily take down the Neptune's Hoard
. She also can't reliably do treasure runs: she is
too costly to lose and may be too slow to outrun
opponents. The last thing you want when you are
carrying the game winning treasure is for your
treasure runner to drop to "S" speed. A final use
for her could be as a floating "home island". Have
your treasure runners dock and dump cargo, but again
Neptune's Hoard is too expensive.
I have this card and I have never punched it out,
which tells you what I think of it. The Neptune's
Hoard is also one of the few cards I have seen
abandoned (unplayed) at the gaming store I frequent,
which means I am not the only one who dislikes this
ship. The Neptune's Hoard is a rather poor
generalist and over costed to boot. She has no
defined role which always earns low marks from me.
Perhaps the other reviewers can find a use for this
pile of junk, 1/5.
