Ability: This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls
against the Cursed. As part of a move action, this
ship may initiate a boarding party against a ship up
to S away from her, without having to ram. The
boarded ship may not use any boarding bonuses.
The original Le Gaule (South China Seas) had all 4L
cannons and a world-hater ability, and cost only 14
points. This version looks like a step backwards.
Her cannons are better ranked, but they're all
short-ranged. Cargo and speed remain the same; her
point cost has risen. The short-ranged cannons make
sense when you look at her abilities, which are all
about the closest of close combat. Le Gaule is a
boarder of the Cursed in general, and a sea-monster
destroyer in particular. Doing an S-board with +1 on
the roll, followed by a five-cannon salute, is a
kraken's worst nightmare.
This ship obviously needs a Captain, or a similar
named crew (the BC Jordan Dumas would give a reroll
in addition to the move/shoot). She needs Pierre
Aronnax to tangle with sea monsters who try to hide
underwater. She could have a Helmsman for triple-S
speed, and Gentil de la Barbinais gives a +1 on her
cannons against non-French ships. That fills her
four cargo spaces, and makes her a scourge of the
seas, especially against things that can submerge.
Her only weakness is against ships that can't be
shot from S range.
This is a decent gunship with a useful role. She
isn't the best choice if you aren't expecting sea
monsters, submarines, or Cursed ships, she has no L
cannons, and her price is a bit high. On the whole,
I give her average marks.
