Cadet-Captain Mike |
Name: USS Delaware
Card: BC #092 (Uncommon)
Points: 12
Faction: USA
Masts: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Cargo: 3 (rating: 2.5 / 5)
Moves: L (rating: 2 / 5)
Guns : 3L,3S (rating: 2.5 / 5)
Hit %: 100 (S), 50 (L)
Ability: This ship eliminates two masts with one
hit.
When the Royal Navy launched the first
battle-cruisers at the beginning of the 20th
century, some naval experts dubbed them "eggshells
armed with hammers." They carried battleship-sized
guns on a hull with cruiser armor; they could dish
out great damage, but couldn't take it in return.
Ships like the USS Delaware fall into this
"eggshells armed with hammers" category.
Her ability, combined with her sub-average cargo,
make her a fighting ship, and a fine one for her
size. Against ships with three masts or less, she's
a killer. But don't make the mistake the Royal Navy
made - don't think that, just because she can knock
down four masts in a turn, she can go head to head
with four-masted fighters. If either of her cannons
miss, she's dead. Give her the obligatory Captain
and Helmsman, and use her as a secondary fighter.
I'd love it if the Delaware had a bit more speed, or
if one of her cannons was 2-rank. But as she is,
she's a fine value for 12 points.

Delaware
I am quite ambivalent about the Delaware. On the one
hand she has excellent offensive capability; her two
cannons, 3S and 3L, take down two masts at a time.
On the other and she will be difficult to use
considering she only has two masts and mediocre
speed. I see this ship being a one-shot-wonder in a
game and then being shelved for the other games.
Consider that placing a helmsman and a captain on
this ship brings the point cost to 17. There are
larger more useful ships that can be fielded for a
similar cost, the special edition Broken Key and
Atlanta from Frozen North. Delaware is disappointing
to me, perhaps others can find a use for her, 2/5.
