Name: Jikininki
Card: OE #012 (Common)
Points: 13
Faction: Cursed
Masts: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Cargo: 0 (rating: 1- / 5)
Moves: S+L (rating: 4 / 5)
Guns : 2L,2S (rating: 3.5 / 5)
Hit %: 134 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: If this ship succeeds at a boarding party,
she may eliminate all of the other ship’s crew.
It's getting harder and harder to find a ship with a
decent turn of speed. S+L ships were as common as
dirt in the first three Pirates releases, but
lately, S+S is the best you'll find. This two-master
is a pleasant exception.
In Japanese Buddhism, Jikininki are ghostly ghouls.
That explains the special ability. Of course, you
have to win a boarding action to use it, which means
you'll only pick on ships your own size and smaller,
and most small ships don't carry more than one crew,
two at most. Her cannons are very good for a two-masted
ship, but you may never get a chance to use them,
because you can't put a Captain (or anything else)
on her. This means she can't be a fighter (or a gold
ship, obviously); ramming and boarding is all she's
good for, and that usually isn't good for much. And
her price is a bit high for a ship with zero cargo.
There's one trick you could pull to make this ship a
powerhouse, though.
Put the new Davy Jones on her. He links to any
Cursed ship, so he doesn't need a cargo space. His
ability (which we'll review in a few
days) is a killer, and would usually let Jikininki
move, ram, board, and then shoot, all in one turn.
Granted, their combined cost is 25 points, and you
don't usually want your high-cost crew on ships that
sink easily. And if Jikininki loses her boarding
roll, you lose Davy. But you could try it if you
really wanted to.
The only reasons this ship doesn't get an awful
rating is because of her speed, and because her
cannons can do some damage if they get the chance. I
can't give Jikininki a great score, but she could be
worse.

Sorry
that I wasn't there to review the Maman Brigitte
yesterday. I didn't want to waste my time
reviewing such a load of crud. OK, here's to a
ship that will get higher than a 1! I think.
OK, so
this ship starts off as an eye-stealer. Why? It
has 0 cargo, which means NO CREW. 13 points for
no cargo is a lot in case you didn't know. Sure,
it has a good ability, but i'd like a little
cargo, or at least a sea-monster ability (see
Teach). It should be lucky it has a good move or
I'd be a bit disappointed in Davy Jones right
now.
Let's
see here. Good cannons, good move, good ability,
worst cargo POSSIBLE, and a fairly high point
cost. I'm not QUITE sure why to sail this ship,
but if it's all ya got, go ahead. I'm afraid
that because it won't succeed at many boarding
parties against ships with lots of crew, because
they tend to be the big ships. And if it does,
that means that they've probably been injured
and should easily be shot down anyways.
Not my
favorite ship. I'd much prefer spending the
points on the Black Swan or something in that
range. I'll have to give this ship below average
marks. Uhm...... lets go with a 2/5.
