Cadet-Captain Mike Name: Davy Jones
Card: OE #016 (Rare)
Points: 12
Faction: Cursed

Link : All Cursed ships
Keyword: Limit.
Ability: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 1–4, you may give this ship an extra action; on a 5, you may give any ship you control an extra action; on a 6, you may give an enemy ship an action.

One word. Ouch. This word is both good news and bad news.

Davy is a mix of three abilities that have been part of various crewmen (and women) for most of Pirates' lifetime. Combining them into one mega-crewman makes him an admiral second to none. Two actions is always good, and you get this 5/6 of the time (if you use a roll of 5 on your own ship). Giving another ship an extra action can hamstring an enemy's tactics. And the fun you can have by giving an enemy ship an action...
the enemy WILL say "ouch" a lot.

The other meaning of "ouch" is about his point cost. Davy Jones is the most expensive crew in the game; only two others match him, King Blackheart (with the same ability) and Captain Whitebeard (who isn't normally used in battle). For 12 points, I could buy a nifty little Pirate squadron - Banshee's Cry, and Longshanks with a Captain. Davy will badly limit your options if you buy him, both because he soaks up so many points and because of his Limit keyword.

Still, you get what you pay for. Unlike some other costly crew (like the move/shoot plus shoot/move crew that cost 9 points), Davy Jones is a good value. For value alone, I'd give him a 4, but I have to mark him down a little, just because he costs so much.

Name: Cavendish
Card: OE #019a (Common)
Points: 3
Faction: Cursed

Ability: Crew of any nationality may use their abilities on this ship.

The Cursed have always been able to use other people's ships as their own, by using a crew with the Black Mark. Cavendish helps with their other weakness, the shortage of useful crew. For three points, you gain the ability to buy any nation's crewman and put it on the same ship as Cavendish.

Obviously, you won't do this just to gain an Explorer because you haven't found any Cursed Explorers yet. You'll want to get powerful crew, like a world-hater (the Cursed don't have any), or multi-function crew like Robert Surcouf or Jonathan Haraden, or perhaps a crew like the Hag of Tortuga that gives you five extra points at set-up time. In other words, you'll want Cavendish on a big fighter that takes a lot of crewpersons. He'll take up a cargo space, but if you get a multi-function crew, that will save a cargo space, so all you lose is Cavendish's 3 points. For a faction like the Cursed, that's a fair deal.

Note that Tabatha McWarren gives the exact same ability, so if you're playing a really big game, you could use both of them and load two gunships to the gunwales with other factions' crew.

Total rating: 3 / 5
