Ability: You own any derelict this ship explores;
both ships become docked at your home island.
Of all the things you can steal in this game, few
are more fun than stealing his ships away from him.
Usually, this means a long, slow ride home with a
derelict in tow. A few ships, like this one, have
some kind of magic teleportation device built in;
just make contact with a derelict, and shazam!
You're home, and so is the derelict. Unload its
treasure, repair its masts, and send it out to
harass its former owner, while your ship stalks
another derelict. You gotta love it! (The enemy will
hate it.)
The New Orleans is unique among ship-stealers in one
regard. Most of them have awful cannons; they need
another ship to make the enemy derelict, so they can
pounce on it. This one has good enough cannons that
it can shoot out some masts on its own. With a
combination of gunnery and ramming, the New Orleans
can be a one-small-ship task force, wrecking an
enemy ship, zipping home with it, then heading out
to do it again. Stealing two ships in one game is
typical.
As a bonus, a ship like this can also rescue your
own derelicts, scooting home with them before an
enemy can tow them or sink them. You could use her
as a simple fighter, and she'd do okay, but that
would be a complete waste of a wonderful ability.
For crew, this ship needs a Helmsman; S+S isn't bad,
but you want maximum speed to get to the derelicts
before someone else does. She ought to have a
Captain, so she can use those 2-rank cannons at
will.
You don't need much more than that.
Stealing a ship can turn a game around. You
instantly claim its gold, and you get a free
increase in your own combat power. The USS New
Orleans is probably the most effective ship-stealer
in the game. If I could change anything, I'd add a
mast, so she could take more punishment. But why
send her in harm's way at all? Her role is to jump
on damaged ships, finish off their last masts, then
take them on a fast ride to their new home. No other
ship does this better.
