Keyword: Longship
Ability: This ship may dock at an enemy home island
and load up to two treasures. If able, she must
leave on your next turn.
I think this is the highest-priced Common ship ever
to appear on the high seas. 17 points is definitely
upper-tier. What do you get for the high cost?
Masts and cargo are strictly average; speed is a bit
low. The ability is nice, and appropriate for
Vikings. But if you want to steal two treasures,
that leaves only one cargo space for crew, which has
to be a Helmsman so you can get in and out again.
That rules out a Captain for using those nice 2S
cannons.
And those nice cannons are the ship's reason for
being. Hrunting is a fighter. As a Longship, every
mast fires twice, giving her six cannons when she's
intact, and that's gotta hurt. But those masts fall
just as easily as any other ship's masts, so an
expensive Longship like this will suffer
disproportionately from damage. I'd crew her with a
Captain and a Helmsman, and maybe a Shipwright to
fix two cannons with each repaired mast. Given that
I'm spending so much on this ship, I probably
couldn't afford named crew for her. And when
approaching an enemy, I'd maneuver very carefully to
be sure I got the first shot.
It's interesting to compare this ship against
another 17-point ship with six 2S cannons, the Jade
ship Grand Path. Given a choice, I'd take the junk;
she carries more cargo, is a more effective boarder,
and is twice as hard to sink.
This isn't a bad ship. But her ability doesn't go
with her stats, and she's overpriced as well. There
are better ships you could choose.

Hrunting
Within the Frozen North set ships like the Hrunting
are big and mean. Each longship gets double the
amount of fire power from their masts and Hrunting
has only 2S cannons. That’s six shots, enough to
reduce any ship in the set to scrap wood (or
plastic…). This ship also has the very Viking
ability to steal not one but two treasures from the
enemy’s island. A good feature, but with only L
movement it will take a while to get to the enemy
island and back to your own. Cargo is average for
the number of masts (three spaces). All of this
goodness costs a whopping 17 points. This seems a
bit much considering what can be had in some of the
older sets, then again it does have 6 cannon shots.
With such slow speed crew is necessary, but on the
Hrunting there is really only enough room for one
crew member to make any use of the ability. I would
place a captain on this ship. Otherwise, the
Hrunting will be a sitting duck while more
maneuverable ships duck in and out for pot shots at
will. The Hrunting looks nice but has a mixed role,
she’ll probably work best as an expensive gunship,
2.5/5. |
