Cadet-Captain Mike
|
Name: USS Quigley
Card: MI # 091 (Uncommon)
Points: 8
Faction: USA
Masts: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Cargo: 3 (rating: 2.5 / 5)
Moves: L (rating: 2 / 5)
Guns : 2L,2L (rating: 3.5 / 5)
Hit %: 150 (S), 150 (L)
Ability: Once per turn when this ship hits an enemy
ship, also eliminate one crew from that ship.
This ship is astonishing in one way: she's fully
comparable to a Pirate ship (the Royal James). Most
Pirate ships are undercosted, while American ships
tend to be expensive, yet this one costs the same as
its black-flagged doppelganger. They have the same
number of masts, the same cargo, the same cannon
rank, and the same special ability, which is a very
good one for a fighting ship. The USA ship has
longer-range cannons, while the Pirate is faster and
is a Schooner. The S+L speed makes the Pirate ship a
bit better, but considering you'd usually pay
2-4 points more for an equivalent American ship,
that doesn't bother me at all.
As with any L-speed ship, you need a Helmsman. As
with any fighting ship, you need a Captain. If you
want to spend more on crew, add a Musketeer for a
third cannon. You don't want to spend big points for
named crew on a two-masted ship that may not live
long in battle.
The nice thing about a ship like this is that she
can do just as much harm to a big foe as to a little
one. If she goes into battle alongside something big
and bad, the enemy will either ignore her and hit
your big/bad (and let the Quigley slay another crew
next turn), or hit the Quigley and leave the big/bad
intact (to smash him with many cannons again next
turn). You win either way.
For an American ship, the Quigley is a steal at 8
points, and a good value. You can easily afford to
make her a second fighter in 30- or 40-point games,
or a third fighter in bigger battles. The enemy
can't afford to ignore her ability, but her
smallness compared to other fighters may force the
enemy to ignore her for a turn or two. That's bad
for him, good for you. She's also a colorful ship
amid the bland hues of most American ships. As an
admiral who usually plays the USA, I like this ship.
A lot.

USS Quigley
USS
Quigley is another slow two masted ship. I have seen
a few of these in the recent sets and I tend to shy
away from them. This ship appears to be akin to a
heavily armed merchantman. Her hold is too small for
a gold runner but her 2L guns and ability to remove
crew are not to be scoffed at in a fight. She does
sacrifice a bit of speed though. In a sealed deck
tourney I may field her and take potshots at the
weaker gold runners that come in range. I think she
would benefit greatly from a helmsman then she
begins to run up in cost and will need to take on
the role of exclusive fighter to be of any use and
at that point I would consider fielding a couple of
three or four masted schooners of equal point cost.
USS Quigley receives a 2/5.
