Cargo: 3 (rating: 2.5 / 5)
Moves: L (rating: 2 / 5)

Ability: Broadside Attack
Here we have the classic English fighting ship: not
very fast, good cannons, an ability that enhances
her combat, and a fair price. We haven't seen many
of these lately. It's good to know that WizKids
still remembers what the English are all about -
battle!
Broadside Attack is a fairly common ability. Most
ships with this ability have a mix of 2-rank and
3-rank cannons, so they have to roll a
4 or better to hit with a Broadside. The Duke of
York's cannons are all 2-rank, so she needs a 3 or
better to land that crushing attack. This is good,
very good indeed, unless you're her target. If you
don't want to inflict four hits at a whack, you
still have L range and enough accuracy to score two
hits per attack (on average).
She needs a Helmsman and a Captain, as always. This
ship is good enough to justify a named crew; I'd
recommend Hermione Gold to replace the Captain and
add a world-hater ability. I don't believe this
applies to the Broadside, but it turns the Duke of
York's cannons into death machines in normal combat.
This is a good ship for a decent price. Her low
speed is the only thing that keeps her from a
perfect score.

HMS
Duke of York
Now here’s a neat little support fighter that I
might consider playing. The HMS Duke of York is only
a three master with same size cargo holds and only
an L speed.
But her guns are all 2L and she sports the
broadsides attack ability. Her point cost (13) is
good for her size and ability, I think. Play her as
a standoffish support fighter. She’ll shadow a
bigger ship pull up short for three 2L shots (before
the big ship goes in) and then close in to cover an
escape with her broadsides if things go south. The
way we play broadsides around here is that no
abilities at all can be played on the broadsides
attack, including the “cannot be hit by ships in S”
and “two hits to remove a mast” abilities. That
makes it a bit more useful than just an extra
cannon. The HMS Duke of York gets 3/5.

HMS
Duke of York
Masts: 3
Cargo: 3
Points: 13
Move: L
Cannons: L2, L2, L2
Ability: Broadsides Attack.
Flavor Text: HMS Duke of York sails the seas between
England and Scandinavia, protecting England from the
Viking threat.
Now, I don't usually put the flavor text of these
ships into my reviews, but this one just strikes me
as a tad funny. Yesterday we reviewed the HMS
Bartlesville, which is the British longship. This
ships flavor text says that it protects England from
the viking threat. Must be doing a pretty good job
of it to be able to capture one, huh?
Well time for the review. I like this ship, even
though it is expensive. It can choose to attack
ships as small as one- and as big as four-masters
and make it out without a scratch (figuratively).
The broadsides attack adds an extra shot and if you
have all your masts you can take out four masts with
one hit. I like this ability.
But, this ship is a bit slow. And it doesn't have
very much cargo. If it was me, i would go ahead and
use the HMS Bretwalda, which adds a mast and a cargo
and makes all the cannons S-range for just one more
point. But this ship can get a job done, and only
because it's pretty pricy, i give it a 2.5/5.

Let's see here. Broadsides coupled with some rank 2
cannons? Sweet.
It's like the Flying Dutchman's second cousin, twice
removed. Not too bad, in my opinion. A helmsman and
a captain would make the Duke of York a happy
camper. Not to mention, those ships that can't be
hit by L range will be a nuisance until you unleash
a broadsides attack on those suckers. Of course,
then again, I could just pay another point and get
HMS Bretwalda from DJC, which has 4 masts, rank 2
cannons, and Broadsides attack. Duke of York is a
nice ship, but unfortunately there are better ships
out there that do it better.
So, Duke of York gets a 3/5.
