Date Reviewed - 5.14.07

Cadet-Captain Mike Name: HMS Galway
Card: OE #051 (Uncommon)
Points: 7
Faction: England

Masts: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Cargo: 1 (rating: 1 / 5)
Moves: S+L (rating: 4 / 5)
Guns : 3S,3S (rating: 3 / 5)
Hit %: 100 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: When this ship carries no cargo, she gets +S to her base move.

The first three things I noticed about this ship are its low point cost, its very good speed, and its absolutely pathetic cargo capacity. These three attributes will determine what this ship is good for.

With a cargo of 1, gold running is not on her list. Granted, she could make a blistering S+L+S speed outbound and S+L coming home, but unless the game is close and only one or two gold treasures are still unclaimed, I can't see the point.

No, this ship is a fighter. Not a great one, mind you - two 3S cannons are not world-beaters. But for seven points, how can you go wrong? Give her a Captain and sic her on enemy gold ships, which she's fast enough to catch. Keep her near your big gunship as a backup. For such a low price, you could just guard your home port if the enemy has a home-island robbing ship.

The English have several small, cheap, fast ships (HMS Greyhound, Discovery, and Starbuck come to mind). This one is typical of the breed, neither excellent nor horrible. I give her average marks.

Sumpbeast HMS Galway

The HMS Galway has one of those goofy abilities that are neat but not very useful. This ship gets an extra S segment to her movement when carrying no cargo. This expands the threat range of her two cannons (both 3S) and makes her a speedy little ship. However, in most constructed games there are few fighting ships without captains and those that don't have captains defend themselves by running. The point is HMS Galway needs a captain to make the most out of her but her special ability is negated if you put crew on her (since crew counts as cargo - someone correct me if I am wrong)!
In a sealed deck game HMS Galway would be of better use. Captains are few and far between and for her 7 points you get the two cannons and excellent speed (base S+L). Still the HMS Galway has her uses, mostly defending/denying islands from treasure runners without explorers. Her movement lets you swoop in one turn and fire the next if the insolent little treasure ship doesn't flee.

I am not to pleased with this ship. HMS Galway gets 1.5/5.

Flavor Text:  HMS Galway was built as a fast warship, and her captain prefers to do the shooting and let other ships clean up the mess afterward.

I like this ship. It's a good little ship as a second fighter, and if you plop a captain on her she can just zoom in and get the first hit in. But i prefer to use her to come in and shoot out the ships with one or 2 masts left because then she stays alive. 1 cargo cant do you much, but this ship was just meant to get a couple hits in anyways.
It's cannons aren't the best. they only hit fifty percent of the time. So what? Its only 7 points. I mean, its not like your gonna find a better ship for seven points. OK, youll probably find a lot. In fact, I think we have one later this week. But still its a good ship.
But, it doesnt really have a good ability. I suppose as a small treasure hunter or a second fighter you could leave it cargo-less and sail around with a S+S+L move, but i prefer to put a captain on her and use a S+L move. Thats more than fast enough for me.
So overall, this is a pretty average two-master. The low cargo forces me to give it a solid 3/5. Whatever, I still like this ship.

P.S. Funny thing, the flavor text is exactly the opposite of how i use her.

England got a huge, and I mean huge boost to their navy in the new set, Pirates at Ocean's Edge. However, for every good ship there's a couple mediocre or sucky ships. HMS Galway is one of those mediocre ships.
Sure, it's fast, but that's all that it's really got going for it.
Without cargo, it has a very nice S+L+S move. Cool, but if you put on a crew or load a treasure, the ship loses its benefit. HMS Galway has potential to scout out treasure for your fleet if you're playing a total English fleet. And then once it gets its lone treasure, well...there goes the ability. While the flavor text calls this ship a warship, HMS Galway is more like an inefficient treasure runner. And while the Galway might help the English, it's worthless otherwise.
Anyway, this ship gets a 2/5. A bit generous, in my opinion.
