Date Reviewed - 5.15.07

Cadet-Captain Mike Name: Lusca
Card: OE #046 (Rare)
Points: 16
Faction: England

Masts: 5 (rating: 5 / 5)
Cargo: 0 (rating: 1 / 5)
Moves: S (rating: 1 / 5)
Guns : 3S,3S,2S,3S,3S (rating: 3.5 / 5)
Hit %: 267 (S), 0 (L)
Keyword: Sea Monster.
Ability: This sea monster gets +1 to its boarding rolls. If it succeeds at a boarding party, it also eliminates a mast.

If they were going to give the English faction a sea monster of their own, why not the Loch Ness Monster? The name "lusca" actually belongs to an alleged giant octopus in the Caribbean, and has nothing to do with the British Isles as suggested by the fluff text. But WizKids never let reality get in their way.

Lusca is bad, very bad, for the ships it runs into. It will often remove one mast with its ram, then get a second mast with its special ability, plus removing a crew or treasure when it boards. Its arms serve as a nasty set of cannons for conventional attacks as well.

Lusca is bad, very bad, at catching ships to attack, though. S speed is about as useless as you can get. The only way this monster can get into the game is either by patiently crawling to a place where enemy ships have to pass, or by taking a risky shortcut through a whirlpool.

16 points is a good representation of the damage this beast can do. But if the enemy has decently fast ships and is even a little bit careful, Lusca will never get close enough to do any harm. Its low speed is a severe handicap.

Sumpbeast Lusca

Woe betide any ship woe cannot evade this sea monster.

Fortunately it is not that hard to do so. Lusca is the standard big squid. Four arms/masts are 3S and 1 is 2 S. If they are all in range you are looking at a regular two hits. The neat thing about Lusca is the special ability, she can remove a mast on a ram. Mind you it doesn’t make her points cost worth it. However, with sea monsters I found that they can hold their own in a big sealed deck multiplayer battle. Keep Lusca submerged until the end game or a safe target of opportunity presents itself. In regular 40 point games I’d sit this model out. If you must play her, take crew like Jerky Johnson or the new Spanish crew that add +L to the base move of all sea monsters in range.

It would be a nasty surprise to have Lusca suddenly ram on of my ships and remove a mast as well as crew.

Still, like I said, I would leave Lusca at home 1/5.

Ability: Sea Monster. This sea monster gets +1 to its boarding rolls. If it succeeds at a boarding party, it also eliminates a mast.
Flavor Text: Carvings of this ancient monster have been unearthed off the coasts of Scotland and Ireland, leading scholars to believe that it is older than history and more evil than anyone can imagine.

Wow, my first question is how did the British end up with a sea monster? Oh well. I guess its not an accurate game. The British fleets are packed with fighters, and I guess this was supposed to be one of them. Its definitely not good enough to be one. It has... a boarding ability. Great. So go board them. Well, then your an open target for shots and your dead.
No this baby was made to FIGHT. not. She can't move, and her cannons are only average. With the slowest move in the game, she can't really accomplish anything. I could go on about this sea monster all day, but I wont.
Well, what am i supposed to say? "Wow, nice ship?" I dont think so. This sea monster obviously got the shaft of the set, and I can only give it as far as a 1.5/5.

What the heck is this? Okay, England got shafted when it comes to sea monsters. America got Champ, but England doesn't even get the Loch Ness monster?
All ranting aside, Lusca is horrible for the 16 points you invest in it. Its ability implies that you're supposed to be out there, knocking out treasure runners and gunships alike, but it only has S move!
Trust me, the only thing that you'll be catching is a fort.
Two things come to mind when I see this ship: HMS Shetland, and Gog-Clocthoth. Lusca has the same ability as Clocthoth, and is about as has abilities that suit it poorly, like the Shetland. No, I won't be using this monster in my fleet. Of course, I do realize that there are crew that give +L to a monster's bas move. If you were playing all nationalities, Lusca could very well be your opponent's worst nightmare. Imagine an L+L+S moving Lusca! Ouch, that's gonna hurt.
But those crew are 4 points each, and they have to be on a ship. No, that won't be used in a 40 point fleet. But in higher totals, it's viable.
Eh, I give Lusca a 2.5/5.
