Name: HMS Victoria
Card: OE #045 (Rare)
Points: 14
Faction: England
Masts: 5 (rating: 5 / 5)
Cargo: 4 (rating: 3 / 5)
Moves: L (rating: 2 / 5)
Guns : 3L,2L,2L,2L,3L (rating: 4 / 5)
Hit %: 301 (S), 301 (L)
Ability: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls
against Pirate ships.
Usually, a five-masted ship counts as a faction's
bug gunship in each new release. As we'll see
tomorrow, that isn't the case with the English in
Ocean's Edge. But HMS Victoria is a pretty good
gunship in her own right. (Queen Victoria wasn't
born until 1819, and it wasn't known that she would
be Queen for another eleven years, so after whom was
this pirate-era ship named?)
Speed and cargo are typical for a 5-master. Her
cannons are quite good, unless the enemy uses a ship
that cannot be hit by L cannons, and they're
crushing against Pirates. Her point cost is
surprisingly low for an English battleship, which
means you have more points free to load her up with
good crew. I'd recommend Hermione Gold or The
Gentleman (in place of a Captain), Admiral Morgan
(possible second action), and a Helmsman.
The English know how to build their fighting ships,
and this is a good example of the breed. I give her
slightly above-average marks.

HMS Victoria
The HMS Victoria is a nice
ship. It is quite obvious she is a fighter and
specialized against pirates. For
14 points you get 5
masts, good range (three 2L cannons and two 3L
cannons), and 4 cargo spots. She only has a move of
L, but that can be remedied, leaving room for three
more crew members. A named captain would be
excellent. Broadside attack may be wasted on this
ship (only a 50% chance to hit). I would consider
adding The Gentleman and Myngs for a duplicate
action. Likely you can save the two points between
Admiral Morgan and Myngs since this ship is likely
to take only shoot and move actions (and you can
shoot on the move). As a final crew member I might
consider taking a generic Musketeer. The extra 3S
shot might be useful against ships that cannot be
shot by L range cannons which are all of the cannons
on HMS Victoria. As much as possible you want this
ship moving and shooting at range, thereby wasting
your enemies S range cannons. Avoid being pinned as
much as possible. HMS Victoria is not the greatest
gunship out there but I would use her in my fleets.
She gets 3.5/5.

HMS Victoria
Masts: 5
Cargo: 4
Move:
L
Cannons: L3, L2, L2, L2, L3
Points: 14
Ability: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls
against Pirate ships.
The only
reason i wouldn't like this ship is because my
favorite nation is the Pirates, and this ship is
pretty much a pirate hunter. She has good
cannons, and a low point cost. Her cargo is only
average, and her move is below average. But that
can be helped with a helmsman, so its only
problem is the low cargo.
The
English ships don't seem to have many treasure
haulers, do they? This is not one of them. This
ship is a deadly weapon by itself, and when
crewed with a captain and a helmsman (and maybe
a world-hater too) Its a demon on the seas. Its
ability really only helps if you're playing
against pirates, but since most of the ships in
the game are from the pirate nation, I don't
think you'll have a problem.
Well,
what can I say? The English have put together
another big bruiser that is infinitely better
than their first one we reviewed (Lusca). But
her ability isn't the greatest and too many of
her stats are only average, so I can only go so
far as to give her a 3.5/5.

Flavor Text:Known as the "right hand of the
Queen," HMS Victoria is systematically hunting down
the last pirates who oppose English trade.
Now we're getting into why the English got it so
good in Ocean's Edge.
HMS Victoria is probably one of the best Pirate
exterminators out there, and when you're going
against a pure Pirate fleet, I wouldn't doubt that
they'd be scared of this ship. Of course, there's
the new USS Constitution that this ship needs to be
put alongside against, but since the English have
superior named crew, the Victoria wins out in the
end. Heck, even if you aren't fighting against a
whole bunch of Pirates, HMS Victoria is a cheap 5
master, and can do her job well.
However, the only problem that is present in this
ship is the fact that it has all L range cannons.
Ouch. Some S range cannons wouldn't have hurt, and
your Victoria will have some problems against those
Pirates that are gifted with the ability of being
immune to L range cannons. Luckily for this ship,
though, those ships are normally 1 masts, so a ram
will do them in quite well. Having 4 cargo isn't
that big of a deal, because this ship probably won't
be your main ship anyway.
Out of 5, HMS Victoria gets a 4.5/5. It's an
awesome ship.
