Cadet-Captain Mike Name: HMS Tweed
Card: FN #049 (Rare)
Points: 10
Faction: England

Masts: 1 (rating: 1 / 5)
Cargo: 2 (rating: 1.5 / 5)
Moves: S+S (rating: 3 / 5)
Guns : 2L (rating: 2 / 5)
Hit %: 67 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: L-range cannons cannot hit this ship.

Everybody loves a ship that's immune to gunfire. Less than half the cannons in this game are L-range, though, so the Tweed's ability is by no means a bullet-proof vest. What do you do with her? Speed and cargo say, "Don't gather gold." The mast count says, "Don't fight or board."
That doesn't leave much, does it?

Her lone cannon is a good one. If I had to use her, I'd give her the obligatory Captain and Helmsman, and send her out with HMS Empress of India. The Empress gets +1 on her cannon rolls if somebody else shot at her target in the same turn. The Tweed can take that shot, give the Empress the bonus she needs, and (maybe) not get shot in return because of her special ability. Or she can be your "finisher," going after enemy ships with one mast left, and turning them into derelicts.

But these are very narrowly-defined roles, and there are other ships that can do it better. HMS Swiftsure comes to mind; for the same cost, you get basically the same ship, but with a shorter-range cannon, and an
L+L move so you can skip the Helmsman. I can't call this ship a good
value, in spite of her fair price, because there's so little she can do for you.

Points: 10
Move: S+S
Ability: L-Range cannons cannot hit this ship.

Again, it seems as if all British ships were made to fight. This one has a great cannon, a great ability, an average move, and a low cargo. But 10 points is a whole lot to pay for one mast. Typically, one-masters are used for treasure, but this one doesn't have enough cargo and it really just isn't fast enough.
So lets pretend that you are going to use this ship in a fleet. Right here it takes up 10 points. You probably want to put a captain and/or a helmsman to make it a good fighter, and that boosts you up at least 2 points, possibly even 5. That's sure expensive for a ship that only has 1 mast.
No, the way to use this ship is to sail it in with no crew to a ship with all L-range cannons and just shoot it down. It does have a use, and it can be used as a good fighter, but it still is way too pricy for just one mast. I give it a 2/5.

Flavor Text:
HMS Tweed is a marvel of naval engineering, so small that she practically disappears into the waves.

When looking at HMS Tweed, it is so tempting to look at HMS Swiftsure.
So, what are the differences between the two? They cost the same, both have 1 mast, have the same cargo, HMS Swiftsure has L+L move, but a 2S cannon, and the same ability. Personally, it looks like I'd be going with the Swiftsure. It's a better ship. Once again, just like the Duke of York, HMS Tweed is beaten by a predecessor. Ouch.
Anyway, I'll give it a 2/5/5.
What's the point in playing this when there are better ships out there?
