Do my eyes deceive me? Do we have, not one, but TWO
good English fighting ships in one Pirates release?
We reviewed HMS Duke of York a couple of days ago,
and now we look at another English bruiser from the
Frozen North.
HMS Royal is superficially similar to the Duke of
York - they cost the same, move the same, and carry
the same cargo. The Royal has one more cannon,
making her a bit more effective at short range, and
not quite as good at long range. But that's before
we factor in her ability, which makes her cannons
2S,1L,1L,2S against anything that doesn't fly the
White Ensign (or the Red Duster). That's a 301% hit
at short range, or a 167% at long range. If that
isn't good enough for a 13-point ship, then your
standards are way too high.
I'd give the Royal a Helmsman, and a crew like The
Gentleman or the first Thomas Gunn the Younger for a
move/shoot plus an extra ability (reroll or
crew-kill, respectively). Then I would go out
hunting. I would enjoy it. The enemy would not.

HMS Royal
Masts: 4
Cargo: 3
Move:
L
Points: 13
Cannons: S3, L2, L2, S3
Ability: This ship gets +1 to its cannon rolls
against all non-English ships.
This is
probably the best ship we've reviewed the entire
week. It has the same ability as the HMS
Bartlesville, but three more masts, which means
its a lot more effective. And, its only 1 point
more. It doesn't have a very good move, but it
has room in its cargo for a helmsman at least,
so it would be an optimal fighter ship.
Not
really a treasure hauler, but really, there
aren't many 4-masters fitted to be them. Sure,
there are a few exceptions, but really 4-masters
are meant to fight. And fight is definitely what
this ship is rigged up for.
Overall,
this is a good ship. The slow move can be helped
with a crew, and the cannons compliment the
ability well. I like this ship, and i give it a
4/5.

Flavor Text:
Prince Harry once stowed away on HMS Royal for an
adventure at sea, where he distinguished himself as
a fine sailor in the English tradition.
You know, if I was giving the HMS Royal a score for
originality, it would get a 0/5. It's the second in
a long, long line of English 4 masted world-hater
ships. Disgusting. Good thing I'm not basing my
score on originality, huh?
But now, to reviewing the actual ship. HMS Royal
really isn't all that bad, looking at it. It starts
off with some awesome cannons, two rank 2's and two
rank 1's. That's enough to rip through most ships
with ease. Its cargo leaves something to be desired,
but for most support gunships, (yes, this ship is
support) all you end up using anyway is a captain
and helmsman, and that one extra cargo space
for...gold? Eh, whatever. L move is once again
something to be desired, but if you're support for
something like the Titan, it's not too bad. Also,
who the heck is Prince Harry? :/ Not that it
matters.
But in conclusion, HMS Royal is a nice ship-pretty
good for what you get, in my opinion. I could say
that you should use HMS London, but I won't. Argh.
Is this the third ship this week that has been
preceded by a better ship? What the heck? Okay,
England got shafted in Frozen North.
Anyway though, I give HMS Royal a 3.5/5.
It's good for what you get, but there's better for
less. If you don'
have the London, though, by all means, use this
ship! |
