Ability: This ship can repair at sea or at any
island.
Here we have yet another fine medium-sized English
fighting ship to gladden the hearts of English
players everywhere. Good cannons, very good speed,
and a low price tag add up to a useful warship in
anyone's book. Her cargo is small, but she doesn't
need many crew to fight, so that's okay. It's her
ability that makes her really special, though.
We've never seen a built-in Shipwright before. The
ability to give HMS Victor a Repair order anywhere
at any time is what the modern US Navy calls a
"force multiplier." This is a ship that doesn't have
to go all the way home, or use up two points and a
cargo space for a Shipwright, to fix battle damage.
Even if the enemy leaves her derelict, she can patch
up a mast, scoot away for safety, fix her other
masts, and head back into battle. If Cutler Beckett
is in your fleet, she could fix two masts in a turn,
and I'm sure your enemy will not be prepared for
that.
I'm sure you've realized that I like this ship. HMS
Victor, plus some of the other new RN ships in
Pirates of the Caribbean, have changed my perception
of the English faction. Here's an interesting
40-point fleet:
the Victor with Thomas Gunn the Younger, HMS Raven
and HMS Hyena with a Captain on each, and Divers. My
piratical opponents will never know what hit them.
