Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: HMS King Edward
Card: SM # ES-007 (Uncommon)
Points: 13
Faction: England
Masts: 4
Cargo: 6
Moves: L
Guns : 4S,4L,4L,4S
Hit %: 133 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: If this ship has a Captain crew, she gets
+1 to her cannon rolls.
This ship has some good potential. The problem is
figuring out "potential for what?"
Her capacious cargo holds say "gold ship," but she's
kind of slow and pricey for that. You could add a
Helmsman and have a fine gold ship for
15 points, but tomorrow's ship, HMS Lady Provost,
gives you the same speed and cargo for 13.
Her ability says "fighter," but her cannons are a
bit weak for that.
Once you add the Captain, her hit percentages rise
to 250 and 150, which is a lot better, but not
stunning. With the Captain and the obligatory
Helmsman, that runs her cost up to 18, which is just
okay for a four-masted fighter. You could add more
crew to make her more deadly, but her price works
against you here; you quickly hit the limit for crew
point value. It doesn't help that England's only
world-haters, Hermione Gold and James Norrington,
are 7-pointers who also give a move/shoot, but don't
count as Captains for the King Edward's ability.
The best solution might be to give her the Captain
and the Helmsman and send her out on missions of
opportunity. If the enemy approaches, you're in good
shape to fight; if not, you still have 4 cargo free
for gold. The King Edward is a good example of how a
big cargo hold can make even an average ship into
something very useful. I just wish her cannons were
a little better.
