Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Black Gentleman
Card: DJ #202 (Limited Edition)
Points: 13
Faction: Pirates
Masts: 2
Cargo: 3
Moves: L
Guns : 2S, 2S
Hit %: 133 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: Fear. Once per turn, this ship may randomly
take one treasure from any ship she touches.
With this ship's abilities, she is clearly meant for
close-quarters action. The take-treasure ability is
better than boarding, because you can't lose and you
aren't automatically stuck with the worst treasure
on board. The problem is catching up to a ship with
gold on it. Without a Helmsman, the Black Gentleman
will never catch anything.
The Helmsman takes up a cargo space and runs the
ship's sail-away cost up to 15. That's a lot for a
ship that's just trying to overtake gold ships. The
2S cannons are good enough to justify a Captain, so
she can fight a little during the voyage. This means
you're taking her into S range of something, firing
twice, and hoping your Fear works (and it fails two
turns out of three). Your 18 points (with crew)
don't get you much, do they? Can you say
"overpriced?" I knew you could.
"Black Gentleman" is another name for the devil.
People used to say, "Speak of the devil and he shall
appear." If I speak of this ship, will it disappear?
I can only hope. She's too undefined for any
particular role, and too costly for what you get.
