The "Flying Fox" is an interesting little ship. Most
ships that shoot submerged things have plenty of
cannons to take advantage of their ability. This
ship has only one gun, which makes her more of a
sniper.
One cannon can't even dent the plating of subs like
the Nautilus or the USS Mercury. Is she good for
anything?
Certainly, given the right crew. And if you're
thinking sub-hunting, the right crew is a Captain, a
Musketeer, and an Oarsman. Now you can sink a small
sub or shark outright, and make those tough subs
think twice about tangling with you. The S+S+S speed
means you can respond to multiple threats all over
the battlefield, moving quickly to deal with each
submerged problem in turn. If a sub rams you anyway
(which is likely), the Oarsman gets you out of
trouble. In a pinch, you could also add your
cannon(s) to a surface battle, but one-masted ships
die too quickly to make this a preferred strategy.
If the enemy doesn't use anything that submerges,
then leave the crew home and use Le Renard as a gold
ship. Two cargo isn't much, but seven points isn't
much either, and S+S+S is great. The ship will
probably pay for herself in just a few turns.
This is a little ship with big possibilities. I like
her.
