Cadet-Captain Mike

Name: Neptune (Pirates)

Card: PC #093 (Special Edition)

Points: 11

Masts: 4

Cargo: 3

Moves: S+S

Guns : 3S, 3L, 3L, 3S

Hit %: 200 (S), 100 (L)

Ability: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against English ships.

There's no ambiguity about this ship's role; she's a fighter. I'm not saying she should go head-to-head with HMS Endeavor, but if the Neptune got the first shot, she could even win that battle.

Cannons are decent, with a mix of S and L ranges so no ship can hide behind a defensive immunity. Speed is reasonable; cargo could be better, but buying four crew would cost you more than the ship's value. The point cost is fair for a four-master. She needs a Captain of some kind, probably a Helmsman, and (to make her extra-deadly) Bruce Grey, the world-hater. That makes her cannons 1-rank against the English. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Your Majesty!

The special-edition four-masters have usually been slightly above-average fighters. The Neptune is no exception. If you don't expect to face the English, there are other four-masters in the same price range that might be more effective (the Sea Nymph and the Raven's Neck come to mind). If you do expect English opposition, this ship will be a worthy addition to your fleet.

Draco Starcloud Neptune

Remember yesterday how I said you could find better ways to spend 14 points than Fleur De La Mort? Here's one fine way.

The Neptune is through and through a fighter. She's got a good S+S base move, two 3S and two 3L cannons, and her ability gives her +1 to her cannons against English ships. Since the Brits have been in every set so far, it's a fairly good ability.

She only has three spaces for cargo, but that's enough space for a captain, a helmsman, and the Specialist of your choice. The Carribean set has the benefit of Captain Barbossa, who was common, able to give +1 to cannons against non-Pirates, and would be an excellent crew member for this ship.

Her major weaknesses are her average cannons and her average cargo space, but that's forgivable for a mere 11 points. Just give her some crew to beef her up.

I give the Neptune a 4/5.

Today we finish up PotC week with the Neptune!

Neptune, 11 points, Pirate

Masts: 4

Cargo: 3

Speed: S+S

Cannons: 3S 3L 3L 3S

Abilities: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against English ships.

Flavor Text: The crew of the Neptune would rather fight the East Indian Trading Company than hide from it.

So...there's probably AT LEAST 10 things in this game with some reference to Neptune...it makes sense, sure, but still. At least 10?

Neptune's Hoard, El Neptuno, Neptune's Trident, and so on, and so forth. Boring. Nice, good ol' bland flavor text, too. But onto the ship!

Do you play against England a lot? A lot? Is that all that your friends play? Then, my friend, the Neptune is for you. Relatively speaking, the HMS London and this ship are on equal terms, except that this ship has 1 less cargo. Which isn't bad, the HMS London is one of those ships that all other ships are judged by.

So, how to crew this ship? It's quite easy, actually. A captain and helmsman, and probably a Fire Shot from F&S. If you desire to add more crew instead of the Fire Shot, I recommend a crew like the PotSM Calico Cat, which can give you the same action twice on the roll of a

5 or 6.

But I'd keep the Fire Shot, mostly because this ship screams "support ship". So, for 17 points (assuming you crewed it the way I suggested) you can have all rank 2 cannons, S+S+S move, and the ability to light masts on fire! Pretty stinking good, if you ask me. Then again, if your opponent only plays England, you could also play the PotCC Eagle, but that's a different story in and of itself. Yeah.

I would say that this ship receives a 3.5/5 from me. It's pretty decently costed and all, but is way too situational for me to over use it.
