Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: El Acorazado (Spain)
Card: SM #SS-001 (Rare)
Points: 21
Masts: 5
Cargo: 5
Moves: S
Guns : 2S,3L,3L,3L,2S
Hit %: 283 (S), 150 (L)
Ability: Two hits from the same shoot action are
required to eliminate one of this ship's masts.
This brute has become one of the "standard" ships by
which Spanish fighters are judged, and is considered
mandatory for any serious Spanish player's
collection. And rightfully so.
Her speed couldn't be worse, but she has plenty of
room for a Helmsman to at least get her up to
average speed. Her cannons are good by most
standards, and her ability is one of the most feared
in the game. It doesn't just take ten hits to
derelict her; each pair of hits must come from the
same ship in the same turn.
The only real problem with "The Battleship" is her
high cost. It isn't out of line, but it's hard to
pay for her and the multiple crew she needs to reach
her potential, and still have points left over for a
second fighter and a gold ship or two. But if you've
got the points, you won't be sorry for using her,
even if it's just from the look of fear in your
opponent's eyes when he sees El Acorazado coming for
him.
Her name means "The Battleship" according to
WizKids' card gallery. A fitting name, to say the
least.
Her ability is one of, if not the, best a fighting
ship could ask for: two hits from the same shoot
action are required to eliminate one of this ship's
masts. Nothing short of a 10-mast junk can demast
this ship with one shoot action; even
two-masts-with-one-hit boats like HMS Endeavour can
only take out four masts per shoot action.
El Acorazado has an impressive five spaces for
cargo; throw in a full load of generic crew for a
horror the likes of which your enemies will dread or
throw in whatever named crew you like.
Her only flaw is her low speed of S, but that can
easily be remedied by a Helmsman.
Her cannons are an average spread, three 3L and two
2S, but she'll be able to fight opponents at any
range due to them.
El Acorazado deserves her name. Her cost of 21
points only works in her favor as it allows her to
be stocked with the best crew possible. From
personal experience, I can attest that this ship is
one of the best you can get. Too bad her Ocean's
Edge incarnation is not nearly as excellent.
I give El Acorazado a 5/5.

I'm going to be tinkering with my format for the
next couple days, until I find one that I really
like. Well, here goes my original format...
El Acorazado, translated into "The Battleship", was
the Spanish flagship from the Spanish Main pack, and
she was well worthy of her rank too. Standing strong
at five masts, consisting of five stellar guns, and
having a fairly large cargo hold, El Acorazado seems
like the epitome of a first-rate Spanish gunship.
And, well, she is. El Acorazado's ability pushes her
up into the ranks of those superior ships. Try
bringing down a five-masted giant that you have to
hit ten times in one turn to sink, and this is
assuming all your cannons hit (which would never
happen). The only thing holding her back from being
utterly exceptional is her speed of a snail and her
high point cost. And who cares about treasure? Even
the flavor text indicates that this ship was meant
to fight. Her base move is S, so don't even think
about using her for treasure. El Acorazado is
definitely worthy of being the Spanish flagship of
the SM pack, and she's a beastly ship when it comes
down to it.

BAILEY
El
Acorazado (Spanish) - PoSM SS-001
Points: 21.
For a ship this good, a point cost this high is
only expected. Still, it makes it close to
unplayable in 30-point battles, and it's a bit
of a stretch for 40-point battles as well. 3/5
Cargo: 5.
5-masters can do better; but, it's still a good
cargo. And, what are you going to need it for,
anyways? You only need 5 crew at the most for
this ship. It's cargo is good, but one more
wouldn't hurt. 4/5
Move: S.
The worst move in the game. This is a turnoff on
any ship. 1/5
Cannons: S2, L3, L3, L3, S2. This ship
has pretty good cannons; a mix of S and L, and a
mix of 2s and 3s. I've seen better, but it's
still pretty hard to do better than these. 4/5
Ability: Two hits from the same shoot action are
required to eliminate one of this ship's masts.
This is one of the two best fighting
abilities in the game (the other is the same
ability flipped). It makes this ship almost
impossible to destroy in straight combat; while
it still is succeptible to a few things, this
ability is top of the line. 5/5
Overall:
This is a great Spanish
battleship that could very well be the flagship
of any Spanish fleet. Of course, the point cost
is fairly unreasonable. Also, its move is
absolutely horrible. The cannons and ability
mostly make up for it, though, and this ship is
a first-tier battleship for any collection.

We
go into the Pride of Spain, today in PotSM Spain
Week.
El Acorazado, 21 points, Spain
Masts: 5
Cargo: 5
Speed: S
Cannons: 2S 3L 3L 3L 2S
Abilities: It takes 2 hits from the same shoot
action to eliminate one of this ship's masts.
Flavor Text: The captain of "The Battleship," pride
of the Spanish fleet and perhaps the strongest ship
ever built, claims that not even the devil himself
could sink her. The mysterious pirate El Fantasma,
however, may soon test that boast.
Sigh...from the ship that everyone feared, to a joke
in OE. I just use this ship, though. Not the other
one. Although rather plain looking, the Pride of
Spain can take a hefty amount of punishment-more
than any other 5 mast ship in the game, and even
more than the Guichuan without DJC Davy Jones,
provided the Acorazado has the right crew.
How does one achieve this? Onto the ship!
When this ship was originally reviewed, Mermaids was
the scourge of the 7 seas. Not anymore. FotG easily
eliminated it. So ships like the Acorazado can now
breathe a sigh of relief!
The first thing you will notice is its speed. In a
treasure game, you will definitely want a helmsman.
And a captain. Luis Zuan, if you have him. Not the
F&S one, though. The MI or the RotF one, please. If
it's a deathmatch, you may also want a helmsman, but
it's not as big of a deal.
I made the classic Acorazado build here, or the "One
Man Wrecking Crew" with a few changes.
Of course, the first thing you may notice is that
she is 37 points, a hefty amount to pay. But in a
deathmatch game of 100 points, it's not nearly as
big of deal. The awesome thing about this ship is
that, with this combo, it would take 3 hits to
eliminate the first mast! It takes
11 hits to derelict it, assuming you hit every
single time. But Nemesio Diaz can cancel a shoot
action! So, for the typical 5 mast ship (I hope that
I'm right), it would take 4 shoot actions to sink
this ship. 1 that is canceled, and 3 that hit every
single time. It would actually be more.
If you want, in a deathmatch game, you can remove
the helmsman, add Contessa Anita Amore (the 0LR+5
character) and add in the Diablo to be towed, for a
perfect 40 point one man wrecking crew.
If you'd ask me, the only problem with this ship is
her speed. That's it. The Acorazado receives a 4.8/5
from me.
A bit biased, sure. But if that S speed was L...man,
that'd be awesome.
