Cadet-Captain Mike |
Name: Cyclone (Cursed)
Card: FS #064 (Common)
Points: 12
Masts: 2
Cargo: 4
Moves: S+S
Guns : 3S,4L
Hit %: 83 (S), 33 (L)
Ability: Galley. Once per turn, if
this ship is touching another ship, reveal all
treasure aboard the other ship. This ship can take
as much unique treasure from the other ship as she
can carry, even those that otherwise can’t be
removed.
Ugh! Every time I see that
steal-unique-treasures ability, I'm reminded of the
Maman Brigitte, a Cursed four-master that might be
the most useless ship in the game. This Cursed ship
costs the same, but has a bit more going for it.
Twelve points is a little steep
for an S+S gold runner in most navies.
The Cursed, however, don't have
much in the way of gold ships; the Cyclone is one of
their better ones. I'd forget about the special
ability and just use her for gold. A Helmsman would
speed her up even further, but that makes her
sail-away cost way too high. The Grim Reaper is
similar, but a better fighter, for the same price;
the Fiddler's Green is comparable for one point
less. There are many Cursed ships that are worse
values, though.
If you pull this ship, and if you
can spare the points, I'd make full use of her.
Although the Cyclone wouldn't be called a good gold
ship in any other navy, she might be just what you
Cursed admirals need.
Goldship rating: 3.3 / 5
Gun Ship rating: 2.6 / 5
Boarding rating: 2.5 / 5
Value for points: 3.1 / 5

Cyclone
Why is it that Cursed ships that aren't four-masters
tend to have some glaring flaw that hurts their
playability? In the Cyclone's case, it's an
almost-worthless ability that requires her to get
close to boats that are probably as good at shooting
as she is.
The Cyclone's ability states that if it touches
another ship, it can look at all of its treasure and
take as many Unique Treasure from the other ship as
it can carry. The problem with this is how many
Unique Treasures will a ship carry at any one time?
The most useful part of this ability is seeing what
your target ship carries for gold so that a ship
with decent boarding or shooting powers can come and
clean that enemy out.
The ability is very detrimental to the Cyclone's
health though; the Cyclone doesn't have the
firepower to take on even ships her size. Her
armament consists of one 3S and one 4L cannon. In
order to use her ability, Cyclone puts itself into
the range of enemy guns and last I saw only Barbary
Corsairs and some other Cursed had worse than 4s on
their guns.
The best use for the Cyclone is gold running. She
has S+S speed to begin with and has four spaces for
cargo.
Long story short, the Cyclone is barely useful.
She's good for gold running, but I wouldn't try
using her ability for anything and combat's out of
the question too. She costs 12 points too, which is
hardly worth what she does - and doesn't - bring to
the table.
I give the Cyclone a 2/5. |
