Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Le Marseillais (France)
Card: CC #072 (Uncommon)
Points: 14
Masts: 3
Cargo: 4
Moves: S+L
Guns : 2L,3S,3S
Hit %: 167 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: When touching a Pirate ship, this ship may
load as much of that ship's treasure as she can
carry.
This three-master isn't quite as capable as the last
two ships we looked at, but she has one attribute
that they lack: raw speed. If you want to catch gold
ships and use the load-all ability, you need speed
to feed your greed.
You might have fun by adding a Helmsman to Le
Marseillais, which should let you catch almost
anything afloat. That leaves three cargo free for
stolen gold, which is plenty in most cases. Then you
could dump your purloined goodies into something
cheap like Le Fureur, and go out for more without
going all the way home first. If the enemy uses
Pirate gold ships, you could make life very
uncomfortable for him. Or you could use a Captain
instead, rob whatever you can, and sink what's left.
If you can't catch a gold ship, your speed and cargo
are good enough for gold running as well (but she's
too expensive for a pure gold-ship role).
Le Marseillais, like the other ships we've looked at
this week, is quite versatile, and that's always
good. She's a bit more expensive, but with her S+L
move, you're getting what you pay for.
Cargo Space: 4 spaces is a good size to use with
this ability. You can hold lots of enemy gold.
Masts: You only get 3 masts here with a 2L and two
3S cannons, which is big enough to pick on a lot of
gold runners and accurate enough to hit a mast if
you have the chance.
Base Move: The Le Marseillais' advantage is her S+L
base move. Good for catching gold runners or fleeing
gunships.
Point Value: 14 is not good considering you get more
value from HMS London or L'Aguila. The only
advantage Le Marseillais has over either of them is
her speed.
The Le Marseillais is a good ship but it has the
unfortunate condition of being overpriced,
especially compared to HMS London.
