Cadet-Captain Mike |
Name: (faction)
Card: PC #072a (Uncommon)
Points: 2
Ability: When touching a Pirate ship, this ship can
load as much of that ship’s treasure as she can
carry.
Gov. Swann lets you take
Pirate ships by surprise
and steal their booty.
You can put him on any English ship, so the enemy
can't know in advance that your ship is going to rob
him blind. Of course, that English ship has to be
fast enough to catch Pirate gold ships, which tend
to be pretty quick, and it has to have enough cargo
to make such a robbery worthwhile, minus one cargo
space for Swann. There aren't many such ships out
there; HMS Lady Provost (S+L move, 6 cargo,
home-island
robber) might be the best choice.
Weatherby Swann wasn't the most effective character
in the Pirates movies, and he isn't the most
effective crew in this game, either. He can surprise
the enemy if you use him now and then, and his point
cost isn't out of line. But if the enemy doesn't use
Pirates, or if his ship can't catch them, he's
useless.

Name: Lieutenant Henry Ducie Chads (England)
Card: MI #043b (Common)
Points: 5
Link : HMS Botany Bay
Ability: Once per turn before you give this ship an
action, roll a d6.
On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given the same action
twice. This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against
Pirate ships.
Lt. Chads doesn't have the
Pirate-robber ability,
but he certainly hates Pirates, so he gets included
in this week's review. He combines a good ability
(+1 vs Pirates) with a great one (the SAT), and he
saves you a point and a cargo space compared to
getting those abilities with two separate crew.
You'll want to put him on a ship with four or more
masts, to maximize the havoc he can wreak, and to
reduce the chance of losing him in a boarding
action. If you can, put him on a ship with a reroll
(or a crew that gives a reroll), to give you a
second chance at getting that SAT. The SAT/reroll
combo has become one of my favorites, and a
consistent game-winner for me.
His link to HMS Botany Bay, a mediocre fighter,
isn't worth worrying about. She costs one point more
than HMS London (see Tuesday's review) and is a much
worse ship. No, put him on something big and bad,
like HMS Grand Temple or HMS Swallow, and watch him
tear the enemy apart.

Governor Weatherby Swann and
Lieutenant Henry Dulce
It's a Crew-fer-Two-fer, the first we've done in a
while.
Governor Weatherby Swann keeps our "stealing from
Pirates" theme going. His only power is to give a
ship the ability to steal gold from a Pirate ship,
which works great in the Carribean set when there
was only England and Pirates, but is less useful in
the overall game. If your opponent uses a lot of
Pirate gold runners and you've got a fast ship with
lots of cargo space, feel free to call up the
Governor; he only costs 2 points.
I give Governor Weatherby Swann a 3/5.
Lieutenant Henry Dulce
The good lieutenant partially fits the week's theme;
he gives a ship +1 to cannon rolls against Pirates
and has a Same Action Twice power. He also links to
the HMS Botany Bay, but that ship can't use him very
well. He's a decent value at 5 points though.
I give Lieutenant Henry Dulce a 3/5. |
