Now here's something new and different. The Aberdeen
Baron is the exact opposite of the usual wisdom that
says, "Big ships are for fighting."
Does the exception prove the rule, or is she a bad
experiment that shouldn't be repeated?
Her guns are not the guns of a fighter, that much is
for sure! Her cargo is good for a gold ship, and her
speed and price are just good enough to keep her in
that category. Her ability (a built-in Explorer)
says "gold"
all the way. So far, so good. Add a Helmsman and
what have you got?
Something very fast, that has lots of room for gold,
grabs it quickly, and ignores the usual two- and
three-masted fighters that tend to prey on gold
ships. They certainly won't try to ram or board her!
This ship could turn the usual gold-running game on
its ear. Send her to the wild islands in the middle
of the map, the ones that get fought over. She can
siphon the doubloons away, shrug off a few hits from
small fighters, and get home in time for a second
cruise. If the enemy wants to stop her, he'll have
to send his big fighter to do it. That gives your
own big fighter an edge - the enemy can't attack
both at once. The Aberdeen Baron is that rarest of
creatures, an unconventional ship design that works.
I thought yesterday’s ship was good for treasure,
but the Aberdeen Baron seems designed for the sole
purpose of treasure hunting!
Five cargo spaces, mostly 4S guns, an S+S speed, and
a built-in explorer mean you want treasure. I’m
surprised that this is a British ship though since
the Spanish are supposed to be the gold lovers.
You could make a fighter out of her with Admiral
James Norrington, but you’d be better off getting a
dedicated fighter if combat’s your game. The one
advantage this ship has over most other treasure
hunters is durability and the price isn’t too bad;
only 12 points.
But you can likely find better treasure hunters for
less points elsewhere.
I give Aberdeen Baron a 2.5/5.

Sweet baby Moses! A five masted treasure runner!
Finally! Aberdeen Baron's cargo and speed are
acceptable for a five master, but her cannons are
far less than usable. Do not use this ship as a
fighter... if you attempt to do so, good luck
rolling all 5s and 6s, with the exception of a mere
ONE 3S. Her cannons are simply atrocious, some of
the worst guns I've ever seen on a five master. Her
ability is one of the better treasure running
abilities, granted you do so use her as a treasure
runner. Finally, her point cost is something to be
praised and considered holy! Behold, the cheapest
five master (as far as I know)! 12 points! Think of
it this way: because of her explorer ability,
there's no need to put an explorer on board.
Instead, replace the slot that would be occupied by
an explorer with a helmsman. Now look at her stats.
14 points for a five master with 4 cargo and a S+S+S
move. I'd use her in a heartbeat. My final rating
might be somewhat biased just because this is really
the first five masted treasure ship, but this ship
deserves to be acclaimed with high regards. Touche,
Wizkids, touche.

I believe
that this is the first 5-master we've seen so
far that is solely used as a treasure ship. And,
in my opinion, it does it quite well. It has a
good speed, cargo, point cost, and ability for
the job, and it has 5 masts for defense as well.
This ship makes a good treasure runner for most
any English fleet.
The only
bad thing about this ship are its cannons. This
ship has dismal cannons; only one of them has a
50% or higher chance of hitting each turn. But
who cares? This ship obviously isn't going to
fight. Put her in to run treasure, with
a fighter ship (say, HMS Apollo, for instance)
to back it up, and it will be good at its job.
It has the built-in explorer, so all you need to
crew it is a helmsman, and it will be good to
go. This ship almost gets perfect marks; an
extra cargo, a lower point cost, a bit more
speed, or a better set of cannons would boost
this ship up to a 5 out of 5.

What positively boring flavor text. It rivals those
of "this ship has never been beaten", or whatever.
Anyway, onto the ship.
Another set, another chip at the former Spanish
claim to the cheapest
5 mast ship. Now the cheapest is 11. Also, I think
that Aberdeen is a province in the UK. Not too sure,
though. Onto the ship, though.
The Aberdeen Baron is unlike most English ships.
It's faster than most, has crud cannons, and is
actually geared to exploring. (Fun
fact: English ships couldn't treasure run out of a
wet paper bag!) With a helmsman (this is all that
you'll need), we now have 4 cargo, triple S move,
and can explore! This ship has another thing going
for
it: It's resilient. I'm totally serious when I say
this ship should have been Spanish, this ship has
the flavor of it. I would have had some nice crew
for it. Unfortunately, the only English crew in the
way of treasure running is Captain Cook from SCS,
and he's a Super Explorer, meaning he can explore
from S. So I don't want to waste the
3 points. The only logical crew to put on here is a
helmsman. Which of course, is pretty cheap. 14
points for a robust treasure hauler is not bad. Of
course, I'd rather have Le Bon Marin. But while I
often rate on comparisons, this time I won't.
It's a good, solid 5 mast ship. Not as good as Le
Bon Marin, but still one of the best of the few
treasure running ships that England can get its
hands on.
The Aberdeen Baron receives a very solid 3.5/5 from
me. Yes, 3.5/5 is very solid for a nation that has
like, 3 treasure runners.
Please don't go complaining on the forums about it.
