For the past two days, I've been saying nice things
about the new five-masted English ships, which have
a history of being quite good.
Their one-masted ships, on the other hand... HMS
Stingray, welcome to the mediocre pack.
As soon as you see the S speed, you know this boat
is in trouble.
Sometimes they offset the low speed with a big
cargo, but not this time.
Her ability is good if she gets shot at, but any
time a one-masted ship is getting shot at, she's
doomed. Even if the enemy has all L cannons and
can't hit her, he can just ram her and that's that.
She can't run gold, she can't fight, she sure can't
board... I guess she looks nice, with the stingray
on her sail and all.
For the same price, you could get HMS Victor or HMS
Hyena, two excellent three-masted ships from the
PotC release; look them up if you aren't familiar
with them. HMS Stingray is overpriced, but she's
useless at any price. Two thumbs down.
A little one-master with immunity to L-range
cannons. That’s nothing new. And like most
one-masters, the HMS Stingray has very little cargo.
Surprisingly, it also has a mere S move! HMS
Stingray’s only cannon is a 2S too, so its only hope
of winning a battle is to fight something that can’t
move and has only L-range cannons.
And all this can be yours in battle for nine points!
Go get a Jolly Mon instead. At least it knows it
shouldn’t fight and can run faster.
I give HMS Stingray a 1/5.

HMS Stingray (English, 9 Points)
Masts: 1
Cargo: 2
Move:
S
Cannon: S2
Ability: L-range cannons can't hit this ship.
Flavor Text: HMS Stingray is a prime example of
England’s newfound realization that stealth can
be as valuable as strength.
This is
the third ship that we review for our English
week, and it's nowhere close to the level of the
first two ships. This ship costs only 3 points
less than yesterday's, has 4 less masts, 3 less
cargo, and a S less move. Sure, it's cannon and
ability are good, but with a S move, it really
isn't going to get anywhere.
I can't
even see how to use this ship. It can't be hit
by L-range cannons, sure; so what? It can be
rammed, or just peppered with S-range cannons.
With a move of S, it really won't be able to
stay more than a S away from other ships. Unless
this is seriously ALL that you have, I wouldn't
ever use it.

HMS Stingray is also a prime example of ironic
flavor text. Onto that later.
Besides that: Look out, Le Colibri! You have a new
competitor for the 'most worthless ship with the
ability to not be hit by L range cannons'!
I mean, why? Just why? If I'm paying 9 points, I
don't want flippin' S speed. Come on. At least Le
Colibri as 7 points. 9 is just pathetic.
With my 2 cargo, I'm going to...oh never mind. It
has S move!
Well, at least its cannon is rank 2.
How can a ship be stealthy if it has S move?!
Sorry for the short review, I've probably said
everything that needs to be said. Anything else
would be overkill.
This ship gets a 1/5.
