Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Rising Sun (Pirates)
Card: RF #031 (Uncommon)
Points: 13
Masts: 3
Cargo: 3
Moves: S+S
Guns : 3S, 3L, 3S
Hit %: 150 (S), 50 (L)
Ability: When this ship is given an explore action,
you can swap a treasure on the wild island for a
crew on any friendly ship.
With her sails decorated like the Japanese naval
ensign, the Rising Sun looks like a refugee from the
Jade Rebellion. But she's a Pirate, and not a bad
one. As a fighter, she's strictly average across the
board, and she'd need another mast or two to make a
good boarder. But as a gold ship, she could shine
like... well, like the rising sun.
When at an island, she can throw a coin to a
friendly ship, and pull a crew from that ship onto
her island. This can put a coin on a ship closer to
home, or it can bring a crew to the Rising Sun when
she needs it. Or both at once, if you're really
clever. It might be worth putting an Explorer on
another gold ship; for one point, you get a crew
that the Rising Sun can pull in, and thus free a
cargo space for the coin that would take the
Explorer's place. Then, the Sun can use the Explorer
while the other ship takes the coin home.
Aside from this ability, she's an average ship. With
a Captain, she could be a secondary fighter. But
gold is what she's all about. Plan ahead, and this
ship could do interesting things for you.

The Rising Sun is mediocre in just about every
aspect of her game except her ability. 3 masts.
Easily taken down, but not immediately taken down.
S+S. She's average in her speed, nothing too slow,
nothing too fast. Her cannons are unexceptional as
well. And finally, her cargo, 3. She can carry
aboard a sufficient amount of crew or treasure, but
who really wants to pay 13 points for a three master
with a few gold coins or an extremely expensive
three master that's stuffed with crew? Her ability
is slightly helpful here. She has a rare ability, in
fact, I've never seen it before, but it seems like
it could be helpful. Her ability seems like it's
saving you money, but if you pay for the crew to put
on another ship, why not just pay it to put it on
Rising Sun? Here's a scenario for you: she's lost a
mast and you only have a one master left (other than
the Rising Sun) and the one master has a shipwright
on board. You load a treasure and trade it for the
shipwright, repair, and you're ready to rumble. Hold
up. I'm sorry to spoil the fun, but who in their
right minds would pay 13 points for a three master
with average EVERYTHING and a couple of good crew on
board? This ship has a tiny bit of potential, but
not much, unless you're willing to waste precious
money on a decent three master.
