Ability: If this ship succeeds at a
boarding party,
she can eliminate all of the other ship’s crew.
This fifth version of Captain Blackheart is a
retread of Diabolito from the MI release; the name
is different, but the price and the ability are
unchanged. Seven points is a lot for a crew who only
earns his keep by boarding. The best way to use
Blackheart is to team him with Wesley (RV), who lets
you do an S-board, so you can clean out an enemy
ship's crew without the nuisance of getting pinned
first. But that's 12 points spent on crew alone,
which is a luxury you won't usually have. Stick to
the original Blackheart (SM), the original sac
captain; he's more useful and a better value.
Link : Lady's Scorn
Ability: Loyal:Pirate. Once per turn before you give
this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this
ship can be given the same action twice.
Like Blackheart, the Calico Cat has been around
since the first release of Pirates. This is her
fourth appearance, and speaking of her appearance, I
hope she isn't going to do anything strenuous in
that outfit she's almost wearing.
This crew is identical to the original Cat, except
that the Loyal keyword has been added, and she's a
Common instead of a Rare. If you didn't get the
first Calico Cat, and you want a Pirate SAT crew,
here she is. But for two more points, you could get
the OE Crimson Angel, another female pirate with the
SAT, and a world-hater as well. The only reason
you'd prefer the Cat is if you have three points to
spend, but not five.
Same-action-twice is a fine ability for any ship to
have, especially fighters. Put her on her linked
ship, the Lady's Scorn, and that ship's reroll will
have "the Cat with the SAT" double-moving about 50%
of the time. Nice. Very nice.
Blackheart (Pirate, 7 points)
Link: Fool's Hope
If this ship succeeds at a boarding party, she can
eliminate all of the other ship's crew.
Crewfer twofer! That's just fun to say. But anyways,
Blackheart is back and referring to his flavor text,
meaner than ever. His ability reflects his cruelty
nicely. If he's tossed aboard his linked ship and
she wins a boarding party, Blackheart can just
annihilate the ship's crew and then Fool's Hope can
eliminate a mast or take a valuable treasure token.
The only downside to this ability is just how pricey
it is. 7 points for the warlord of the Pirates who
has a boarding ability? I don't think so.
Blackheart's got a good ability, but the price makes
me alter my views.
I'll give Blackheart a nice 3.25/5... above average,
and deadly on his link, but just too expensive.
Calico Cat (Pirate, 3 points)
Link: Lady's Scorn
Loyal:Pirate. Once per turn before
you give this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or
6, this ship can be given the same action twice.
The female pirate has came back into the packs, but
she's a bit of a disappointment. The Hostile and
Loyal keywords are an inconvenient trouble that one
must go through before playing with some of the top
tier crew. Calico Cat
must be in a
fleet with another Pirate ship, or else you can't
play her, something that's not impossible or too
aggravating, but it is inconvenient. Luckily she
isn't hostile towards anybody just yet. Her actual
ability is a bit of a letdown as well. You can get
an extra action crew for just two points more in
Sean "Cannonball" Gallows, and why waste 3 points
like this?
Calico Cat gets a generous 2.5/5

Today for our Crew-fer Two-fer: RotF Blackheart and
the Calico Cat!
Blackheart, 7 points, Pirate (Link: Fool's Hope)
Abilities:If this ship succeeds at a boarding party,
she can eliminate all of the other ship's crew.
Flavor Text: "Known to use torture and other
unspeakable acts to acquire gold, Blackheart is
considered by many to be no better than the Cursed.
Still, he is pirate through and through, only too
willing to inflict a little bloodshed to guarantee
respect."
So, the Pirates get their second crew that
eliminates all crew on a boarding party. Their first
one was PotMI Diabolito. So, why use Blackheart? In
fact, why use either? First of all, Blackheart links
to the extremely powerful Fool's Hope, which allows
you to do some extra damage to an opponent's ship
when you win a boarding party.
Essentially, if you win a boarding party with this
Blackheart and Fool's Hope, you do major overkill on
the enemy ship.
But anyway, the reason you would use this crew in
the first place is because it is painful to lose a
boarding party, and lose all of your crew with it!
Plus, if you win you still get to take a gold piece.
(Even more if used in conjunction with the Fool's
Hope).
All in all, this is a great crew. It may be
expensive, but you definitely make up for it with
mass carnage. Which is ALWAYS fun.
This Blackheart gets a 4/5.

Calico Cat, 3 points, Pirate (Link: Lady's Scorn)
Abilities: Loyal:Pirate. Once per turn before you
give this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6,
this ship can be given the same action twice.
Flavor Text:The Calico Cat is the most powerful
female pirate on the cursed seas. Afraid of nothing,
she has single-handedly put down a variety of
enemies, from mighty England to beasts from the
depths.
Nothing stands in her way, and she happily collects
treasure from those she deems unworthy of possessing
it.
Another set, another Calico Cat. This one is the
worst out of all of them. And why do I say worst?
It's a carbon copy of the PotSM Calico Cat. Oh, and
that's not all. This one has "Loyal:Pirate", which
means that all of your stuff has to be Pirate. Well,
okay. That doesn't really matter, as I don't think I
would ever use the Cat in a non-Pirate fleet. But I
digress.
Again, I must ask WHY? The "Loyal: Pirate" actually
cuts your options for different fleets. And it costs
the same as the PotSM one! Or, I could pay 3 more
points for the PaOE one, which is absolutely
fantastic.
This one gets a 2.5/5. Please don't use this thing.
Oh yeah, and the actual card is a misprint, she
isn't 5 points. If she was, then I would give her a
1!
I hope you enjoyed my cynical remarks, and more
importantly this Crew-fer Two-fer.
See you next time!
