It's not hard to figure out why L'Intrepide gets so
little attention.
For one point more, you could get Le Bon Marin, one
of the best gold ships in the entire game. "The Good
Sailor" has the same speed and cargo as L'Intrepide,
plus a built-in Explorer. Why would anyone pick
today's ship?
One good reason is that L'Intrepide has two masts;
Le Bon Marin has one. That makes L'Intrepide twice
as resistant to cannon fire. And she can take a ram
and still keep sailing - try that with a one-masted
ship! Her cannons are just okay, but in a pinch, you
could put a Captain on her and use her to harass
enemy gold ships; she'd do all right in that role.
But instead of looking for reasons why you should
use L'Intrepide instead of Le Bon Marin, why not
take them both? Eleven points won't break you, and
now you've got a pair of fast, effective gold ships.
Add two fighters with Captains (like L'Afrique and
the original Le Bonaparte), and you've got an
excellent 40-point French combo fleet.
How can you lose?
Furthering the Tiny Common Boat Week going on
post-holidays is the French boat L’Intrepide. Its
best features are its speed (S+L), its cargo (4),
and its point value (5). Its average cannons (two
short-3s) mean you won’t want it to pick fights,
especially against English boats which get +1 to
their cannons rolls against it. But since English
fighters usually have good cannons anyway, this
ship’s “ability” won’t be doing them too many
favors.
I’ll give this boat a 3.75, because it’s good for
retrieving cargo and not much else, but it’s really
cheap!

Flavor Text: The English reserve a special hatred
for L'Intrepide, who true to her name goes where
others fear to tread—most especially among English
Royal fleet.
L'Intrepide is a classic Frenchie. Good speed, good
cargo. She has the speed to run from a ship pursuing
her, and her cannons won't help too much in that
degree. Granted, her cannons aren't terrible,
they're exactly average. Her cargo on the hand is a
whole 'nother story. For a mere five points, you're
bringing in a minimal of four treasure points
(that's only if you have TERRIBLE luck). This ship
brings back a whole lot more than she's worth, so
you get what you pay for. Her ability is one of the
worst in the game, but again, she's only five
points, and most of the time you're not playing
against Brits. If you are, just avoid them at all
costs because this ship can really deal some damage
treasure wise.

L'Intrepide is going to be hard to rate, mainly
because I'm a huge fan of the French. I'll try
my hardest not to overrate it though.
It has a
good cargo, move, and point cost. It's cannons
are decent in case it gets into trouble. It's
ability doesn't help, but all you have to do is
steer clear of any English ships and you'll be
fine. It has all the stats it needs to be a good
treasure runner, with a fast speed, hefty cargo,
and low point cost. And that's exactly how to
use this ship. Let it run treasure. It will pay
for itself after really only one trip.
The only
reason I can't give this ship perfect marks is
because the French have so many other good
treasure runners, so this one can still be
beaten out if you have the right ships. But, on
the good chance that you don't, this ship will
do the job quite nicely.
