For our first review of a Rise of the Fiends ship,
we'll look at one of the new ship types, the
scorpion ship. This kind of ship can almost ram, and
knock down a mast every time; furthermore, the
rammed ship gets pinned and the scorpion ship does
not. This is a nasty ability in the game. In real
life, given how brittle our ships' plastic is, I see
those movable scorpion hooks getting broken a lot.
This ship has the fatal handicap of S speed, which
will make it hard for her to catch anything worth
sinking her hook into. Her cannons are adequate
against a gold ship, but not against a real fighter.
Her cargo is good, but her speed and cost rule out
gold-running. The only way she'll get into the game
is with both a Helmsman and a crew that gives a
second action, SAT, or sac captain. A Shipwright
might be worth including as well; a clever foe might
leave this expensive ship derelict, rather than sink
her and bring the Eternal keyword into play.
The Scorpion ability is a killer, but this Scorpion
is too slow to use it fully. She isn't cheap,
either. If you can spend the extra points for crew,
she could scare the eye-patch off your enemy, but
that's a lot of points sunk into one three-masted
ship.

Whoo! The first ship we're reviewing from Rise of
the Fiends! Again, whoo! It looks like the Cursed
have some new toys to play around with, some pretty
dangerous new toys too. The introduction of the
scorpion ship is here, ladies and gentlemen. A giant
claw replacing the first mast of the ship, this my
dear friends, is the scorpion ship. Scorpion's
ability, other than the scorpion ship part of it,
makes it so that this ship cannot be sunk, but hey,
can any Cursed ship literally be sunk? I mean,
aren't they already dead? But that's beside the
point. The Scorpion's got a nice ability and some
nice cargo too. Her cannons are adequate, so it
appears that she's an acceptable fighter, right?
Yes, except for the fact that she moves a S.
Unbearably slow, and even with a helmsman, Scorpion
only moves a S+S and now it'd be 17 points. Tough
luck. The ship's got a good ability, good cargo,
good cannons, bad speed. And did I mention it's the
first ship we're reviewing from Rise of the Fiends?
For a third time... woo! My final rating might be
somewhat biased on the fact that this is the
introductory ship to the new pack, but oh well. Here
goes it...

This is the first ship that we
review from the new pack, and it's looking
pretty sharp. It has pretty good cannons, good
cargo, and a good ability. Sure, its move is a
drawback, but with a helmsman it still becomes a
decent move. The Scorpion and
Eternal keywords are relatively
new -- both of them seem pretty good, especially
Eternal. Basically, load this
ship up with a helmsman and a captain at least,
and then sail out, hit someone with that
devastating scorpion claw, and then blast him.
If you don't survive the return fire, it's ok --
you go straight back to your home island with
only 3 masts to repair. It seems kind of unfair,
but it does keep this ship out of the battle for
a while.
Overall,
this is a strong ship. The Cursed finally seem
to be getting some good fighters, and this seems
to be one of them. I like this ship, even though
it doesn't move very fast. I give it slightly
above-average marks.
