Cadet-Captain Mike |
Name: Sea Hag (Cursed)
Card: FS #031 (Uncommon)
Points: 15
Masts: 4
Cargo: 3
Moves: L
Guns : 3S,3S,3S,3S
Hit %: 200 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: Schooner. If this ship
ends her turn in a fog bank, on her next turn she
can use her move action to move out of any other fog
bank in play.
If the Sea Hag had no ability and
cost 10-11 points, she'd be a fine value. The
question is, does her ability make her worth 15
points?
She's kind of an average ship,
with decent cannons and cargo a bit on the small
side. Like many Cursed ships, she's good at ramming
and boarding, so I'd just give her two crew (Captain
and Helmsman) and leave the third cargo space empty
so I could swipe something by boarding. She can
shoot her way out of a jam against most 2- and
3-masted fighting ships, and hold her own against
ships that are her own size. Her ability could let
her zip from one end of the gaming area to the other
in one turn, if there enough fog banks, and if they
are in the right places.
That's the problem; her usefulness
is almost totally dependent on the terrain on the
game board, which is unpredictable.
In our gaming group, we rarely use
terrain, so if I announced that I wanted to use fog
banks, the other players would immediately become
suspicious. If fog is normal in your gaming circles,
you might well find the Sea Hag darting from one fog
bank to another, ambushing enemy gold ships and
vanishing before an avenging gunship could get close
enough.
If that's the case, then add 0.5
to each of my ratings below. If fog isn't common in
your corner of the Caribbean, then this ship isn't a
good value, and that's that.
Goldship rating: 2.6 / 5
Gun Ship rating: 3.4 / 5
Boarding rating: 3.2 / 5
Value for points: 2.6 / 5

Sea Hag
I'll say this about the Cursed, their ships often
get some of the most unique abilities in all of
Pirates. Too bad those unique abilities aren't
always worth the ridiculous cost that accompanies
them.
The Sea Hag is no exception. It brings back that old
"fog bank teleporter" power the Mist Walker
introduced in Davy Jones' Curse. Great power to have
if there are a lot of fog banks in play, otherwise
it's just dead weight.
Schooners are usually gold runners in my experience,
but the Sea Hag doesn't have the cargo space or the
speed to run gold. Her stats make me think of her as
an average fighter, but because of the Schooner mast
arrangement, she can never bring all of her guns to
hit a single target.
Her guns are all 3S, so you need to get close to hit
anything.
Her base move is an L, which is strike one against
gold running.
She only has three cargo spaces, which is strike two
against gold running.
The Sea Hag only needs two strikes to be out,
because she's not a great ship. She's an average
ship that costs as much as two ships of her quality.
It's that Fog Bank power, I tell you. She costs 15
points and I can't recommend using her with less
than three fog banks or a kindly Smokepot Specialist
present. If you wanted to try using some interesting
tactics with the Sea Hag, you could set up some
strategically-place Fog Banks on the board and then
use a Smokepot Specialist and a crew with a Reverse
Captain ability to give this boat an easy escape
route. Just an idea I had real quick.
I give the Sea Hag a 1.5/5. |
