she gets +S to her base move.
There are people on this board who sometimes take
issue with the ratings I give in these reviews, and
that's okay. This ship is proof that my system isn't
perfect. She's not the best gold ship France ever
launched, but she's a good one.
Her ability means she'll spend half her time moving
at S+L, and the other half at L, which averages out
to S+S. Four cargo is fine and dandy, and nine
points isn't bad. Her cannons are fair, but her role
isn't about shooting them. If you put any crew on
her at all, it should be a Helmsman, which would
really make her fly, but she needs no crew to make
her useful.
When I ran this ship's numbers through my Magic
Spreadsheet of Piratical Numbers, it gave a gold
ship rating of only 2.6, which is way too low.
So I ignored the spreadsheet and gave her the rating
I thought she deserved. She's not quite as effective
as the older French gold ships, like Le Bon Marin,
L'Intrepide, or Le Pique. But if you don't have
those ships in your collection, and you want some
gold on your home island, the Glaive will serve you
well.
