Name: HMS Apollo (England)
Card: FS #003 (Rare)
Points: 13
Masts: 5
Cargo: 3
Moves: S+S
Guns : 2S, 3L, 3L, 3L, 2S
Hit %: 283 (S), 150 (L)
Link : Thomas Gunn
Ability: When this ship is docked
at your home island, you can eliminate one treasure.
It becomes a 3S cannon that can be eliminated only
when the ship sinks.
At last, a clearly defined
fighter! This ship is the only one we review this
week that has the luxury of L cannons, and she's
also the lowest priced and the fastest (if you just
look at raw speed, unboosted by abilities).
Just taken as-is, this will make
an effective flagship for any English fleet. Her
ability can turn a 1-gold coin into a sixth cannon,
making her very nasty (and you could keep adding
cannons as long as your supply of gold holds out).
Then add her linked crew, Thomas Gunn (if you can
afford his 9 points), for a Captain and a
world-hater who can affect any ship in your fleet,
and things are looking bad for England's enemies.
She'll obviously need a Helmsman,
and some kind of Captain if you don't use Gunn. As a
third crew, I'd use someone who protects your crew
from elimination, because you don't want to lose
Gunn to a cheap little ship that kills a crew with a
hit once per turn.
13 points for five masts, all with
decent or good cannons, is a very good value. HMS
Apollo may not be in the same league as the Titan or
the Endeavor, but I'd put her in the Top Five of
English five-masted ships.
