Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Le Breton (France)
Card: FN #070 (Rare)
Points: 14
Masts: 3
Cargo: 4
Moves: L
Guns : 3L,3L,3S
Hit %: 150 (S), 100 (L)
Ability: Icebreaker. Crew of any nationality may use
their abilities on this ship.
Someone will have to explain to me why an icebreaker
would want multi-national crew, or much crew at all.
All they do is crush ice, right?
Le Breton can fight if she must, but why risk a
14-point ship in battle when you can get ships with
similar guns and more speed for as little as 10
points (like Le St. Michel)? The high point cost is
due to her ability, which means you don't want to
use her for anything but icebreaking. All the crew
she needs for that is a Helmsman. And once you've
spent 16 points on a ship whose role is removing
terrain, you'd better hope the enemy puts some
icebergs on the game table, or your expensive little
ship is pretty much useless. Okay, she can gather
three treasures at S+L speed. But that's doing it
the hard way.
Le Breton looks nice, and she has decent guns and
cargo. But France has plenty of cheaper, more
effective ships for both fighting and gold running.
If you aren't using icebergs, then leave this ship
home.
The Le Breton is a lot like yesterday's Mohican, but
has a few key differences.
Le Breton's guns are two 3L and one 3S, so you trade
accuracy for better overall range. Not a great
trade, but it's okay if you prefer long range.
Le Breton is an icebreaker, so she can demolish
icebergs and ignore terrain. A good advantage if you
use a lot of terrain.
Le Breton also costs 14 points.
Le Breton is otherwise identical to Mohican: 3
masts, base move L, four cargo.
Because of her icebreaker ability and her
less-accurate guns, Le Breton makes a better gold
runner and a worse fighter than the Mohican, though
the right crew can change that easily.
