Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: La Espada de Dios (Spain)
Card: BC #061 (Rare)
Points: 15
Masts: 4
Cargo: 5
Moves: S+L
Guns : 3L,3S,4S,5S
Hit %: 149 (S), 50 (L)
Ability: Galley. This ship may dock at an enemy home
island and load one treasure. If able, she must
leave on your next turn.
Here, we might have the ultimate home-island robber.
She's got speed, she's got plenty of cargo, and
she's got lots of masts so she's hard to sink.
The "Sword of God" also has a very high price tag
and some truly wretched cannons. With all that
cargo, her best role is to run gold, and pounce on
an enemy home isle if the opportunity arises. She
can also do a good job of boarding, with good speed
and four masts. She'll have to bring home a lot of
doubloons to pay her cost back, but she has the
speed and cargo to do it. If you want to crew her,
you could either add a Helmsman for super speed, or
a Smokepot Specialist to make it hard for the enemy
to chase her. I'd be reluctant to spend any more
points on her, though.
The Espada de Dios is a good ship for bringing home
pieces of eight, whether you ever use her ability or
not. She isn't Spain's best high-end gold ship (I'm
still partial to La Santa Isabel), but she's a fine
choice for any Spanish combo fleet.
Cargo Space: Five spaces is the best you can hope
for on a raider.
Masts: A 3L, a 3S, a 4S, and a 5S make combat an
unlikely but possible prospect as long as you strike
first.
Base Move: S+L is a great move for a raider to have.
Point Value: 15 points might be a little too much,
but you do get some good qualities.
The La Espada De Dios isn't a great ship for combat,
but she has excellent gold running and raiding
prowess. If you like raiding and big ships, go ahead
and use La Espada De Dios.
