Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: El Galeon de Gibraltar (Spain)
Card: MI #059 (Uncommon)
Points: 14
Masts: 4
Cargo: 4
Moves: L
Guns : 3S,3L,3L,3S
Hit %: 200 (S), 100 (L)
Ability: This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls.
She gets +2 instead if her opponent is a submarine.
The Gibraltar Galleon is a solidly-built four-master
that can do just about anything well. Gold running
is her weak spot, but with a Helmsman on board, she
can do a good job of that as well. Her cannons are
okay for fighting; she'd need Captain and Helmsman
for that role. Or, if you want to use her ability,
she still needs a Helmsman, and I'd probably add one
of the Spanish crew that give a move/shoot and an
S-board.
I don't understand the usefulness of a boarding
bonus against submarines, since subs never board
anybody; they ram and back off. In spite of this, El
Galeon is a good all-around ship that, with the
right crew, can do anything you want her to.
The El Galeon De Gibraltar also comes from the
Mysterious Islands set, but gets a bonus against
submarines instead of sea monsters. In terms of the
Mysterious Islands, it's a better ability since
there are at least four times as many submarines as
sea monsters in that set. In terms of the other
sets, it's less useful since are almost twice as
many monsters in all sets combined than there are
sea monsters.
Cargo Space: 4 is a decent cargo, so she can take on
a crew without having too poor of a cargo. Maybe
that Fire and Steel crew guy who adds a cargo space
would be good for this ship.
Masts: Two 3S and two 3L, and this time they aren't
in Schooner formation. Good for boarding, good
enough for fighting.
Base Move: Just one L? Oh no! You won't catch any
gold runners with this speed. You may need a
Helmsman. Alternatively, you could board enemy
fighters.
Point Value: 14 is a lot to pay for a ship that
needs more speed.
The El Galeon De Gibraltar is better used to board
enemy fighters and taking out their crew rather than
trying to steal gold.
