Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Gilded Monkey (Pirates)
Card: CC #012 (Common)
Points: 11
Masts: 3
Cargo: 4
Moves: L
Guns : 4S,2L,4S
Hit %: 134 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: Schooner. This ship may dock at an enemy
home island and load one treasure. If able, she must
leave on your next turn.
A fairly common ability in Pirates is the
home-island robber. Have you ever used this ability?
I did, once, using this ship. I still marvel that I
got away with it.
Her cannons don't say "fighter" to me. Her cargo is
adequate for gold, but you'll want to add a Helmsman
to use her in that role. Surprise - she also needs a
Helmsman if she hopes to use her ability. That gives
you a sail-away cost of 13 points for a ship with 3
free cargo, so if you just want a gold ship, you can
do much better. Three masts means she can withstand
a few ram attacks from enemy gold ships, which are
(hopefully) all you'll encounter near the enemy home
island.
Bear in mind that you'll only get one chance to use
the Gilded Monkey's ability in a typical game; even
if the enemy is dense enough to give you two shots
at his treasure trove, such a journey takes so long
that the game will end before you can make a second
trip. The price you pay for this ship probably isn't
worth it, unless you get lucky and steal a
high-value treasure, or unless you grab some good
coins from wild islands on the way home. The Gilded
Monkey is a one-trick pony, and she isn't good
enough at that one trick to be worth using very
often.
