Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: HMS Lord Lineton (England)
Card: CC #036 (Common)
Points: 14
Masts: 3
Cargo: 3
Moves: L
Guns : 2S,2L,2S
Hit %: 201 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: Schooner. This ship may dock at an enemy
home island and load one treasure. If able, she must
leave on your next turn.
Fourteen points for an L-speed home-island robber?
That's sixteen with the Helmsman that she'll need.
Can you say "overpriced?" I knew you could.
England has several home-island robbers that are
better for the job than the Lord Lineton; HMS
Gibraltar and Lady Provost come to mind.
But there are three equalizers on HMS Lord Lineton -
her three fine cannons.
If you had the points (19 of them), you could crew
her with a Captain and Helmsman, and make a good
little fighter out of her. Sure, she'd be expensive;
you could get the same speed and cannons out of HMS
Nautilus for only 13 points. But the Nautilus
couldn't fight her way to an enemy home island,
swipe a golden goodie with her one free cargo space,
and fight her way out again.
If you expect resistance, or if you want a ship that
can fight as well as rob, HMS Lord Lineton combines
the robber's ability with good cannons. She isn't
cheap, and you'll probably have to tailor your
entire game strategy around her. But her mix of
talents is a potentially potent one.
Cargo Space: Three spaces isn't very good for a
raider, but adequate for battle.
Masts: Two 2S and one 2L make for a good fighter,
but the Schooner mast arrangement limits your firing
angles.
Base Move: An "L" is good for a fighter, but not so
great if you want to raid gold.
Point Value: 14 points is too much for a small
fighter and too much for an inadequate raider.
The HMS Lord Lineton would make a good fighter if
its masts didn't block its guns from concentrating
fire and it were cheaper. It doesn't do a good job
of raiding either unless you think the low payoff is
worth it.
