Disclaimer: my remarks about USS Overton will be
biased, because the one time I've used her in
battle, she turned in an absolutely amazing
performance. You can read all about it at
http://www.cke1st.com/Games/Batl_2007.htm if you
wish; scroll down to the battle report for
07/12/2007.
The Overton's hull colors are a little odd, but
that's the worst thing I can say about her. Her
cannons are good, and they're very good against
other nations (217%). She has more cargo space than
some of the four-masted ships we've reviewed this
week. I'd crew her with a Captain, a Helmsman, and
perhaps a Musketeer in case she meets a ship that
can't be hit by L cannons. That still leaves one
cargo free to swipe something off a wild island, or
by boarding.
This ship is similar in many ways to USS Sioux,
which has less cargo, two 3S cannons, and a lower
price tag. They'd make a mean team. But the USS
Overton can do just fine on her own, thank you very
much. She can do more harm than many bigger, more
expensive ships, for a very fair price.
Even if she hadn't been a hero the first time I used
her, I'd still like this ship.

USS Overton
World-Hater Week concludes with the USS Overton, a
three-mast American ship with, of course, a
world-hater ability. The USS Overton's is slightly
better since her world-hater also applies to forts,
but that part of the ability is of limited use since
there are only a few forts. Her flavor texts sounds
more appropriate for a boarding ability, but let's
not let that cloud our judgement.
The USS Overton's primary advantage is that she has
four cargo spaces. If her base speed weren't "L"
she'd be a decent gold-runner. Her guns are
above-average against Americans at two 3L and a 2L,
then they get good against non-Americans.
The USS Overton costs 12 points, which is more than
I think she's worth. She's still a good boat though
if you have 12 points to spare.
I give the USS Overton a 3/5. |
