When I first looked at HMN Rumbarrel, I wasn't
impressed. But the more I look, the more I like her.
This is one of the few ships with a boarding bonus
against subs that might actually get a chance to use
it. One-masted ships are tempting targets for a
rammer, who will often follow with a board, in hopes
of swiping some easy gold. Turtle ships' masts are
just as vulnerable to ramming as any other ship's
masts. But the Rumbarrel can resist boarding well,
even if derelict; and her oars enable her to creep
home without her mast, so the enemy can't afford to
ignore her. This makes her a gold ship with some
good potential.
If only she held more cargo! A Pirate admiral could
make a very nice treasure fleet with eight points
(Jolly Mon, Rover, Mermaid, and Banshee's Cry; 8
cargo, speeds from S+S to L+L). But if you face a
submarine, those cheap one-masters will die like
snowflakes in a blast furnace, whereas HMN Rumbarrel
can fight off a sub and make it home. In the right
circumstance, which doesn't happen often, she could
be a game-winner.
