Name:
USS Eagan (USA)
Card:
MI #088 (Uncommon)
Points:
15
Masts: 4
Cargo: 4
Moves: L
Guns : 2S,2L,2L,2S
Hit %: 268 (S), 134 (L)
Ability: This ship can shoot at
submerged ships within S of her.
Four words: I like this ship. Two
more words: A lot.
With four 2-rank cannons in a mix
of S and L range, the USS Eagan has the makings of a
darned good fighting ship. Her ability is aimed at
submarines, but will also work against sea monsters,
making her a good choice for any American fleet, any
time. Her speed could be higher, but she has plenty
of room for crew to remedy that. I'd give her a
Captain, Helmsman, the version of Montana Mays who
gives an extra action and a +1 on boarding rolls
(could be handy against sea monsters), and maybe a
Firepot Spec to even the odds if she gets jumped by
something too big to handle. 29 points for a
four-master and crew is a lot, but the Eagan is good
enough to be your main gunship in a
40- or 50-point battle.
As I've said before, 15 points
seems to be the "magic number" for American ships;
there are a bunch of very good ones with that point
cost. The USS Eagan definitely deserves a place on
that list. Even if your enemy doesn't give you
anything submerged to shoot at, she's still a superb
fighter that will earn her keep.
Goldship rating: 2.5 / 5
Gun Ship rating: 4.2 / 5
Boarding rating: 3.6 / 5
Value for points: 3.4 / 5

USS
Eagan
Here's a ship I can get behind! There's no mistake
about what you'll do with this ship. It's a fighter,
through and through, that specializes in killing
submarines.
The USS Eagan's ability is that is can shoot at
submerged submarines within S of her. Two of the USS
Eagan's guns are already S-range, so it's not a big
deal. She's got a great mix of guns, two 2S and two
2L. She can go toe-to-toe with a lot of ships and do
well.
For a four-mast boat, the USS Eagan has a lot of
cargo: four spaces! She can grab a stray piece of
gold in between sub hunts or be packed to the gills
with awesome crew. Her speed is only "L" so a
helmsman is a good choice in addition to the captain
you'll need.
I really like this boat, as you can tell. It's not
perfect, but it's the best an American can get if
you're out to kill a sub. 15 points is a good value
to pay.
I give the USS Eagan a 4/5. |
