Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Intermediario (Spain)
Card: SS #002 (Rare)
Points: 17
Masts: 5
Cargo: 2
Moves: S+L
Guns : 3S,3S,4S,3S,3S
Hit %: 233 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: Sea Monster. If this sea creature is within
S of both a wild island and a friendly ship, you can
place one treasure from that wild island on that
ship as a free action.
Another brand-new ability for sea monsters! The
"Go-Between" can do just that -- float between an
island and a gold ship, and pull a coin from one to
the other, without surfacing, or even having to
explore the island first. How cool is that?
Unlike yesterday's squid, Intermediario has plenty
of speed to get where it wants to go. Its cannons
are so-so, but five arms will win most boarding
actions for you. It has two cargo, so it can bring
home the fruits of two boarding actions. But I
suspect it will spend most of its time funneling
coins to friendly gold ships. Position the squid
just right, and your gold ship can stand off S+S
from the island and still get treasure via this
friendly beastie; that could be very helpful.
Enemy ships won't go for your gold ship unless they
have the size and power to take on a squid first.
Intermediario is a support monster, not a shooting
monster or a boarding monster. It can shoot decently
and board well, but its high cost is justified by
its ability. If you don't intend to use that ability
to the max, there are far better uses for 17 points.
But if you want to put some new spin on your Spanish
gold game, this could be a very interesting way to
do it.
