Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Canela (Spain)
Card: SS #025 (Common)
Points: 11
Masts: 3
Cargo: 3
Moves: L
Guns : 3L,3S,3L
Hit %: 150 (S), 100 (L)
Ability: Schooner. Once per turn, if this ship is
within S of an island, you can mark the island as
explored without docking at it. The island becomes
unexplored in regards to all other players.
The "Cinnamon" is a rather typical ship, without
much to be said for her, good or bad. Her cannons,
cargo, speed, ability, and price are all quite
ordinary. She's a little bit better at fighting than
other roles, but even there, she's no superstar.
What's extraordinary about her is that WK planned
Spain's ships for the Savage Shores release as an
integrated fleet, and even the Canela plays an
important role. The Intermediario, Buscador, and
Native Canoes are all aimed at excellence in gold
running, as are the named crew, and they succeed
with flying colors. The Canela's job is to use her
ability to pre-explore the wild islands, so the
really potent gold ships can clean up at top speed.
She's also a safe place to put your Tribal Chieftain
if you use the canoes, since she'll be a
low-priority target for enemy fighters. The only
other crew she'd need would be a Helmsman, so she
can get to the islands before the other gold ships
do. Her third cargo space should be kept free for a
treasure that the Buscador or Intermediario might
lob her way.
By herself, the Canela is about as ordinary as a
ship can be. As part of a fast Spanish gold fleet,
she can play a vital supporting role. My average
ratings reflect her average stand-alone role, but
when you're assembling your treasure fleet, by all
means keep her in mind.
