One of my friendly enemies, Bosun Zach, has grown
quite fond of the Valeroso over the course of
several battles. She looks quite distinctive with
her paddle wheels, but she has some other virtues as
well.
Chief among these is her generous cargo space. Yes,
you can get 5 cargo for less (like El San Francisco
for 8 points, and she's also a bit faster), but you
won't find a better combination of defensive
attributes for less. The Turbine ability means she
keeps her full speed even if derelict, which can
make her quite hard to sink. Add the crew-protect
ability, and it's obvious what this ship should do:
hire a Helmsman and go gold-hunting in dangerous
waters. A fighter could leave her derelict, and
she'll still run for home at S+L speed, which is
enough to outrun many fighters. Her cannons are
adequate for self-defense, but she's no gunship; for
13 points, you could get the OE La Resolucion, one
of the deadliest gunships in the entire game.
The "Brave One" is a good combination of cargo and
attributes for a reasonable price. If she had a
little more speed, she'd step into the top rank of
gold ships. But she'll serve you quite well as she
is.
