Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Pawtucket (USA)
Card: FS #052 (Uncommon)
Points: 11
Masts: 3
Cargo: 4
Moves: L
Guns : 3S,2L,3S
Hit %: 167 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: After looking at treasure on a wild island,
you can trade any one treasure from that island for
a random treasure on any other wild island. This
ship must load the traded treasure.
I have to give WizKids credit; they were really
trying to give the Americans some decent gold ships
toward the end. The Pawtucket is a fair attempt,
with good cargo and an ability that can be quite
useful (and fun).
Too bad they forgot a gold ship's most important
attribute: speed. Even a ship with a cargo of 1 or 2
can pay for itself if it can make two or more gold
voyages during a battle. A ship with L speed can do
this only by giving up a cargo space for a Helmsman.
That turns the Pawtucket into a 13-point ship with 3
free cargo, which isn't such a good value.
Compare her to Le Dijon, a French ship with the same
cargo and ability,
S+L speed, and a cost of only 8 points, and you'll
see what I mean.
Fortunately, the Pawtucket's guns are good enough
that she can also serve as a fighter. Add a Captain
to the Helmsman, and she becomes a dual-purpose ship
that can load two gold, swap one for something
that's
(hopefully) better, and swat most enemy gold ships
and secondary fighters she might meet along the way.
She still isn't a stunning value, but she's a lot
more likely to do something useful for you.
