England reaped many benefits from being the only
faction other than
Pirates in the PC release; she got at least half a
dozen notable ships
there. One that often gets overlooked is this little
hound dog.
The English are known for their fighting, not for
grabbing pieces of
eight, and they have very few good gold ships. This
is one of them,
though. She has all three attributes of a successful
gold ship -- low
price, high speed, and good cargo. Her guns and
ability are so-so, but
you can ignore them. Just point the Hound to the
nearest gold and say,
"Fetch!" She needs no crew, just protection from
bigger enemies as she
goes about the business of fattening His Majesty's
treasury. You should
add an Explorer if you play with more than the
standard number of wild
islands, since she's fast enough to make multiple
gold runs in one game
and get more value from the move/explore than she
loses from the
occupied cargo space.
HMS Hound isn't exceptional, but she's quite good.
(The Americans and
Cursed wish they had something like her!) She fills
a hole in the
English order of battle that may let you win on
gold, something the
English don't often do. For seven points, you can't
go far wrong. While
your Endeavours and Titans are blasting the enemy,
the Hound can make
you rich in the background.
