Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: HMS Lord Walpole (England)
Card: SM #ES-016 (Common)
Points: 10
Masts: 3
Cargo: 4
Moves: L
Guns : 2S,2L,2S
Hit %: 200 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: When this ship hits another ship, you
choose which mast is eliminated.
As I review this ship, please be warned: my opinions
may be a little biased. You see, HMS Lord Walpole
was the first Pirates ship I ever pulled and
assembled, almost four years ago, and she has
sentimental value to me. That doesn't mean she's no
good, mind you.
For ten points, you get three very good cannons,
fine cargo, and an ability that can be useful. What
you don't get is the speed that we'd expect from a
medium-sized, medium-priced ship. Of the 21 English
ships that cost ten points, 11 of them (more than
half) are faster than this one, including one of my
absolute favorites, HMS Nautilus (S+L, same cannons,
and an ability that tends to be even more useful).
The Lord Walpole isn't the best of the lot, but
she's certainly a good fighter once you speed her up
with a Helmsman. Any other fighting crew you want to
give her will benefit her; you're limited more by
her point cost than her cargo. Or you can just use
the Captain and Helmsman, and use the two free cargo
spaces to grab a little gold on the side.
If the HMS Lord Walpole had a little more speed,
she'd be a very good ship indeed. Her slowness isn't
fatal, since her cost is low enough that you can
probably afford the Helmsman. She's not great, but
she is good.
