San Cristobal
And the number one ship on Pojo's Top Ten Pirate
Cards of 2008 is the beast that put the "Spanish"
back into "Spanish Main!" Or it would have if
Pirates hadn't switched to the "Pirates of the
Cursed Seas" name. Anyway, this ship is a worthy
successor to the great Spanish ships in previous
sets. Why? Because it excels in cargo, firepower,
and speed, has a great link (though ironically he's
not in the same set!), and has a good cost.
Cargo Space: Five spaces, the best you can
reasonably expect it to have. You can have lots of
speed or gather lots of cargo. Your choice.
Masts: Five masts armed with two 3S and three 3L
guns make for a well-armed ship. Not the best guns,
but with five of them, it's in a good position to
argue.
Base Move: S+S is a great base move for any ship,
let alone a fighter. Don't bother with a helmsman;
even a generic captain will give this ship a +L
(thanks to San Cristobal's ability) and a
Move-and-Shoot.
Point Cost: San Cristobal's a little pricey at 17,
but you get quite a bit for your points.
Very few ships don't have reason to tremble at the
sight of San Cristobal's sails. Her only flaw is her
guns, and that's a minor flaw. Either version of
Victor De Alva, her linked crew, will make her a
stronger ship. You could give the San Cristobal both
a Captain-equipped crew and a helmsman, but then
she's be almost TOO FAST.
I give San Cristobal a 5/5.
