For our first ship reviews of 2009, we'll go back to
the beginning and look at some Pirate ships from the
very first release, Spanish Main. Our first victim,
the Sea Nymph, is one of my favorites.
Any time a ship can move faster than S+S, I like her
already. Add four decent cannons and a below-average
price tag, and I call this a fine flagship for any
Pirate fleet. Her cargo is a bit low, so she won't
make her mark as a gold ship. All the crew she needs
is a Captain, or one of the many Pirate crew that
give a move/shoot combined with something else; I'm
partial to the original Jack Hawkins (move/shoot and
crew kill). That gives you an effective fighter for
only 15 points, with plenty of points to spare for
gold ships and a secondary fighter. This was even
more important when Pirates first came out, because
the standard game was only 30 points at that time.
I've used the Sea Nymph a time or two, and so have
my friendly enemies.
She's a good ship with fine speed and a fine price.
